From - CNN

Americans of all ages are being hurt by the weak job market, but the nation's teens are in a particularly bad spot.

The unemployment rate for teenagers in the labor force soared to 27.6% in October, up 1.8 percentage points from the month before and hitting a third straight record high, the Labor Department said Friday.

That compares with a 10.2% jobless rate for the nation at large.

"What we're seeing is a very tough market for everyone, but teens in particular who are looking for work just can't seem to find it," said Jim Borbely, an economist at Labor Department.

The surge in unemployment among 16 to 19 year-olds comes as the weak economy has forced a growing number of adults to compete for jobs that teens normally fill in industries such as retail and food service.

That's a big problem for teens, who are generally seen as less qualified than adults because they have fewer years of work experience.

Well maybe the teens should look at becoming a wal-mart greeter, force those old people to retire LOl I'm kidding of course. I can see this as a huge problem for teens these days. I go to a full sevice gas station and it's always an older fella I go to the supermarket and it use to be kids taking my goods to the car not a guy in a walker. Compition is tough but yet again most kids don't like work anyway these days. I was working at 14 and I needed to as when I turned 16 I wanted a car, that was my motivation.

There is work out there, they just have to keep trying. One afternoon handing out resume's doesn't cut it.

I think it depends on the state you live in and the skill levels people have. I think one thing that changed alot in terms of making money is the internet. I make over $200 a month just in google adsense on about 6 websites and I know very little on codding. if you have skills in graphics, codding, writting, seo ect there is money to be made. you just have to think outside the box, the idea that you need money to make money. I spend maybe 5 hours a week just adding new content and thats about it. I could make much more but working 60 hours a week kills me for free time.

Again, not surprising that in all the segments of unemployment, that teens would be the worst hit. And as a people, we usually want adults to have jobs before teens.
