Of course it doesn't look like a weasel
It looks like quite a few members of musteloidea though

Looking at the jaw (the rear of it) I'd say he was right and did a good job. That explain why it looked mustelidy (very, very similar families) :)

After reading through 14 of the pages of this thread, I came to the conclusion that it could be a spray-painted racoon as EC stated. Or it could have been a spray-painted fennec fox that someone had as a pet, painted, then released to the wild. This matches up with the large ears, size, fox-like body, and the jawbone looks to be almost an exact match, but it doesn't explain the weird paws. Maybe mange would make a fox's feet look like that as the lack of hair may make the feet look abnormal.. but then again maybe not. I have to defer to Mattshark and his expansive knowledge on the subject. I know it's a dead thread, but I wanted to chime in as well...

The jaw is definitely raccoon, it is very similar to that of mustelids, but the raccoon coronoid process (The back part of the lower jaw) is shaped differently to that of a mustelid.

Raccoon jaw, with the the indentations in the coronoid process.

And the marten jaw, were the coronoid process is smoother in shape.

Ok,

2 things, firstly:-

The above video shows a few things that can happen with captive bred foxes. They start to change into a whole new type of fox by the looks of it. But I don't think your creature is a fox because of the paws.

Secondly, on this picture :- http://i35.tinypic.com/2dum26o.jpg

Look too the left  of its head and there appears to be black 'dye' on the leaf, it's not a shadow as all the other shadows are, well, shadow coloured. Diagonally further up and to the left is another leaf with black stuff on it. I think someone earlier mentioned possible engine oil, it certainly looks like motor oil to me. I doubt it is dye, as if someone dyed it they would have kept it nice and warm until it dried. Oil on the other had would stay oily. So it probably fell into an old oil drainage bucket or something and then escaped and tried to lick the oil off its fur and unfortunately been poisoned to death quite quickly. In which case its probably a dead juvenile raccoon that looks jet black. It's face may not look right especially if it has had some of its nose cut off by the machine the man was using in the field. I know it looks like its nose is in the right place but that could be a flap of skin from the wound?

Well that's my thoughts anyway.

I know it was a Raccoon spray painted with black spray paint....

How do I know this?

Because I take the time to read the entire thread before making myself look ignorant for not doing so,

Thus knowing the OP has all ready stated enough, and has the same conclusion....

Read people read......It is not that hard.

I just looked through again, where's the bit about spray paint? If someone sprayed it while it was alive then someone should call the police! It's animal cruelty! (If it was dead when it was sprayed then that's fine, I think it's classed as modern art)

Okay folks, I went for the skeleton today. It was dug up, and after picking through lots of left over fur, we came up short. By a lot. No skull.

But I found one part of the lower jaw, and here it is.

Posted Image

I have other bones, but to me I think this makes it 99.9% a young raccoon.

After digging it up there was a really strong smell of spray paint so, as was my original theory that some hooligans had spray painted, I think I will return to that idea. The vet's observations that it had scars on the feet (and, I also noticed, clipped nails) suggests that it lived in a cage, and the state of it's appearance, being exceptionally malnourished -- which gave it the image of being slender and lithe, probably suggests that it was caught in a humane trap and cruelly treated for some time.

How's that work for everyone?

I do have another skull I found while digging out an old stall in the barn, and I think I'll post it later this evening. For the sake of keeping the topic alive, luls.

A lot of pets go missing in your area? I think you have a manic on the lose torturing animals like the infamous Serial Rabbit Killer:- http://www.timesonli...icle4304071.ece

No need to be sorry, it happens more often than not, especially being new....The forums need some kind of system to point to a " solved " area...Or a hint to read the entire thread.

Yeah, like the OP should edit the original post and update with any replies he adds later in the thread. But then that might get confusing too if you reading it for the 1st time. Anyway, do we have an overall answer for this one? Or do we vote?

I vote spray painted baby raccoon.
