I have actually experienced sleep paralysis a couple of times and am glad to know that scientists are making a
serious study of this phenomenon.

Well I can explain a lot about why people see ghost during sleep paralysis.  We'll first of all I am asian, and my religion is really based on ghost and the after life.  One of my best friends mom is a shaman and she has been through a lot of ghost and after life encounter because that's her job in my religion.  We'll according to many shaman and my parents, sleep paralysis is paranormal and it only occurs when a ghost spirit from the after follows a person. The ghost may follow that person because he/she likes that person.  After the ghost follows a person, it will follow the person often and at night sleep with the person.  It depends though because some ghost only stay with that person for one night.  But if it happens often to someone, then according to my religion, the only way to get rid of it is to get a shaman to do ritual kind of activity and identify the ghost and what caused the ghost to follow that person.  Then if possible communicate with the ghost, if not, the shaman will determine what kind tools the shaman need to give to that person so the the ghost will be restricted from that person.

I have never really believed in my religion especially when it comes to sleep paralysis, but what made me believe this is because one of my best and closest cousin has a ghost attached to him, as a result, he often gets sleep paralysis. Also he have seen his ghost many times before.  What made me believe him is because now he's 23 years old but he is still scared to sleep by himself.  He still shares a bed with his little brothers because he says when he sleeps by himself, the ghost comes but when he sleeps with people than it doesn't come.

His little brother told me a story that one night, like around 3 midnight while everyone was asleep, his older brother (the one with sleep paralysis) just ran down the hall, ran into his little brother's room, slammed the door, and jumped on his bed. He also covered himself with a blanket.  So the next day my cousin (the little brother) asked his older brother what happen the night before, and his older brother told him that he saw a girl in red dress, with hair covering her face, laughing and she was walking and around him, so he got scared and ran to the room.

i understand that sleep paralysis is real, but i must say that i have never met or known anyone who has experienced it.
what gets me is that so many people want to make it something paranormal or evil.
as far as i'm concerned it is completely biological.

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

my experience with sleep paralysis is not as severe as these. When I was younger, maybe about 10 or 11, maybe even 12 i had awoken from sleep being unable to move. I was laying on my stomach with my face deep in my pillow so i couldn't see anything around my room. The reason for waking up is because i had felt an intense shock in my neck and a loud noise. I remember thinking "Was I struck by lightning?!" and i continued to lay there until i decided to just try to sleep and if I wake up in the morning and I still couldn't move then i'd have a problem.

Nothing like this has ever happened to me again.

I've experienced sleep paralysis occasionally since I was in my early teens. I'm now 45. It happens maybe 3 or 4 times a year and it is indeed terrifying. Not because of anything supernatural but because my mind wakes up before my body. I'm certain that it is a strictly biological event. I've never seen anything strange in fact I can't open my eyes until the rest of me wakes up.

I should also note it only ever occurs when I am sleeping on my back.
