                                                The United States hopes to send an astronaut to Mars in a nuclear-powered rocket, according to a senior Nasa official. Under the space agency's ambitious plan, humans would be sent on a two-month journey to Mars in a spaceship travelling at three times the current speed of space travel.

President George Bush may announce the plan, named Project Prometheus, at his State of the Union address on January 28, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

                                                Could this be the start of the 21st Century "Space Race" I was talking about in another post a couple of weeks ago ?

Is this going to be NASA's response to China and India attempting to reach the moon within the next 10 years ?

                                                This is the kind of thing I would prefer. Let other nations go to the moon for the sake of getting there. If NASA goes back to the moon at all, it should be to build a base, and advance knowledge for future space exploration.

But I like the idea of Project Prometheus, because it's about implementing a whole new propulsion system and to send a manned flight where it's never been before
