An empire involves the extension of a state’s sovereignty over external territories. the greatness of an empire is based on the extent, population, economy, duration and many other factors such as type of rule and government, satisfaction by its people etc. The calculation of the land area of a particular empire is controversial. In general, the sequence in list centers on all the aspects that make an empire mighty, strong and progressive and all the factors as mentioned that make a kingdom great.

I'd move Roman higher on the list. And Russia has always struck me as more of a country than an empire. At least not so much as to be part of the list.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse...A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Russia was made an Empire by Peter the Great. I don't see why she would be any less of an empire than any other on the list.

But I would have moved British Empire to the number one spot.

Thats tell more about you then about list. No offence. However list is subjective, probably. Byzantine empire should be in list. Roman empire shpuld be on first place. Song or Tang dynasty second. Not Qing.

Yeah right. English propaganda.
Roman was greatest empire of all.

Second Spainyards deserve to be higher above then English, yet we dont see them on the list.

I just don't see expanding into sparsely populated areas being the key of getting the title of a great empire. If that's the basis then the US and Canada should be on the list. Aside from being big Russia wasn't much different than the other European empires that were running around at the time, and more often than not was seen as a bit of a backwater.

Where is Sassanid?Dutch colonial empire? Sweeden empire? Seleucid?

Im mean its all right but leaving Macedonian empire and Byzant and to not give first place to Rome is unforgiven.

What a terrible list. The Roman Empire should be much higher on the list, virtually every civilization that existed west of India was heavily influenced by it (including the Islamic Empires). The Ottoman Empire is also way too high on the list, they were very powerful for a time but they stopped being relevant long before they fell. They also don't mention the American Empire (starting with the annexation of the Philippines, or possibly before that) , which should be very high on the list. By the time of WWII the United States had a larger economy than any other country, and you can't deny the influence- for better or worse- that the United States has had on the world.

Nonsense, it ignores it's own statistics, whoever compiled the list put the Ottoman empire at the top of it for no other reason than they wanted to, why is Britain the only empire on the list without dates? there's no mention of the informal empire countries who's trade and finances were controlled by Britain IE China
Britain had the largest Empire the world had ever seen by far.
Thank god i'm an athiest.

Perhaps because people these days tend not to see Cortés and the Conquistadores as someone to look up to?

Life is a hideous business, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous.

And English people were angels?  :tu:
Nevertheless Ottomans are at first place yet they were brutal.
And what will every historian tell you that most brutal army of all in the history was Mongolian army yet we seen their empire in the list.
