actually in the artical i read yesterday it says surgens were able to restore his sight so he must not have ripped it all out. my impression of this was that he did both eyes at the same time.

also i laughed so hard when i read the priests comment about how he kept going even though people had left after the guy was taken to the hospital.

also, bracket: XD you just earned ten points for that comment. OMG.

LOL, okay, you got me. No, I mean someone that extreme had to set up a course of red flags by some previous actions in his life. Wouldn't you think?

Don't care how many voices I heard, I wouldn't rip my eyes out. This guy had to be seriously high or something.

Wait a minute.....BOTH his eyeballs?

You mean that crazy fellah got on his knees, slowly ripped his eye off till it was completely destroyed. Then after experiencing the most horrible pain he goes for the other one??

Damn...

I'd imagine he did both at once

I was only playing devil's advocate, no pun intended...

And of course an organized government could ban organized religion; if they can ban drugs, they can for sure ban religion, as religion is the 'opiate of the people'.

And yes, this man has needed some help long before this act happened.  He just probably was a shy/quiet man and nobody really noticed anything until he committed this act.

Religion doesn't turn people into crazy lunatics, just as drugs don't turn people into crazy lunatics.  The craziness was already there, and the religion/ the drug helped push them to where they would have gone already.

The quotation, in context, reads as follows.

Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.  -Karl Marx

And after seeing meth and pain killers get their claws in some stable people i once knew i have to disagree that they were crazy all along. 5-10 years of meth or pain pills destroyed their personalities and turned them into paranoid nutters. I've also seen normal people go god squad all of the sudden who were seemingly nonreligious and end up as dazed and detached as a 24-7 pot head. Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name.
