Rain is lashing the windows on a gloomy winter’s afternoon in the suburbs of Amsterdam. It is not quite five o’clock – a bit early for cocktail hour – yet Lex Jacott and Henk de Rooy are enjoying a giggle over a glass of chilled port.

The backlit bar behind them glows, adorned with an assortment of bottles of designer beers, spirits and vodka.The two friends flirt in jest, toasting one another and bursting into laughter.

It could be a scene in a swanky club in London, New York or Amsterdam, the latter only a 20-minute drive away.

But this is Hogewey, a pioneering care facility for some of Holland’s most severe dementia sufferers.

Wow, I really liked reading this. They're actually treated like human beings - as they should be. Those are some devoted people that work there.
