Congressman Ron Paul
If you were a member of Congress for a day, what type of legislation would you introduce first?

I think that congressmen have really no say about the good of the people the U.S. all they care about is lobbying for their own selfish causes. So If i were congresswoman for I day I WOULD BE LIKE THE REST OF THEM AND NOT SHOW UP TO WORK AND GET PAID FOR IT!!!!

My bill would require all able bodied persons between 18 and 35 to register for a public service selection program.  A lottery would be imposed but volunteers would also be accepted.  Younger folks could learn a skill like plumbing, electrical, carpentry or IT.  Older "draftees" could be instructors in same areas.  Areas of training and service wouldn't be restricted to these; they are just examples.  The idea is to replace bloated union payrolls with relatively inexpensive labor while benefiting the population with training at the same time.  There would be a six to 8 week basic training to instill motivation and get everyone in a better place physically.  The labor pool would be provided to federal agencies primarily but States could get in on the act also.  Length of service would be two years with an option for exceptional individuals to stay involved longer if they chose to.

I kind of like the idea of a selective service, but I'm afraid you are a bit naive about construction if you think they can learn to be an electrician or plumber in 6-8 weeks. Most apprenticeships take around 4 years.  Heck, it would probably take 6-8 weeks just to teach the Osha 30hrs, 10hr, lift training, Msha 10hr, Lead Awareness, Asbestos Awareness, Tool use and safety, Forklift/Skid loader training, Municipal/state codes, etc.
I have worked in both union and non-union construction around here in Iowa and have a bit of insight on the bidding process. The price is generally about the same with one company or another usually going below cost to "buy" the job to keep their guys busy. Some companies do have advantages for being material costs or an abundance of cheap college labor or a pool of highly skilled guys, but it generally washes out.
The sad truth is, 95% of the construction workers I have seen (union and non-union) will in my opinion be dependant on the government in their retirement years.  Construction simply just doesn't pay enough for the physical toil it takes on the body.

Going back on topic. I would introduce a bill to ammend the constitution to half the number of senators and representatives and possibly a balanced budget ammendment with exceptions for war and national emergencies. (I do think the US needs a credit card, I just think we shoudln't be using it for everything)

The six to eight weeks was just a "boot camp"  some physical training, orientation kind of time.  The 2 years would be the training.  I like your idea also - but good luck prying jobs away from a congress critter :w00t:

Ice cream and puppies for everyone!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse...A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I would try to get a bill passed to tie the salaries of "Congress Critters" to the financial well being of their district...  if the district's finances improve (surpluses, etc) then the Congress Critter's pay can be allowed to improve by an appropriate percentage... If it goes down.. .so does the Congress Critters...

I would also increase a Congress members time in office to 4 years, from 2 - so they are not campaigning all the danged time - and limit them to 3 terms - no more 'lifetime Congress-members'... Then they have to get a real job (or move up to the Senate)...

I would also work to institute a single nation-wide election method (electronic - not punch cards or checking a block) and work to insure un-biased recording of votes...

A lot of other things that I would like changed as well - but I only have one day...

I would pass a law that all courts, especially those dealing with children, should be audited monthly. There should be people, people not employed by the courts, going through all the cases, looking at the numbers. And no child under the age of 18 should be allowed in a courtroom without two adults. My hope would be at least one would be a responsible adult. No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to be questioned by law enforcement without 2 adults present.

Also no adult should be allowed to claim another adult as a dependant unless that person is physically or mentally unable to work. The rest of shouldn't have to pay for anyone else's husband or wife.

What about cases where children have been abused by parents? Would those same parents have to sit in while the child is being questioned? Assuming there are no other adults in the child's life.

No it should one family member if possible and one non family. And all should be recorded. Whether they are victims of abuse or charged with a crime. If I had one day to be a member of Congress I would concentrate on laws to protect single mothers and children from the courts.

I would to sign a bill that requires all congress people to admit to a drug test. Also, put in a bill to end lobbying since that does more harm than good.

Coming to think of it, I would pass a bill that prohibits campaign contributions and personal spending for election campaigns, every candidate would get $10.000 for the first two primaries and $2 for each vote they got in them to continue campaigning compliment of the taxpayer. Any spending beyond that would disqualify the candidate.
