I had to travel down there yesterday and had an old woman dressed in the a-typical hemp clothing, with dreads, roll her window down and whilst shaking her head, screamed "You know how much good you could have done with ALL the money you wasted on that gas guzzling black cockmobile you arrogant b******?!?! IT'S BECAUSE OF A***HOLES LIKE YOU GLOBAL WARMING IS KILLING MOTHER EARTH!" (referring to my Gallardo) I turned and laughed at her and said  'Excuse me for doing something nice for myself, I've spent my entire grown life after highschool in the military sacrificing and laying my life on the line for the pedantic ramlbings of an ungrateful, imbecilic and asinine person such as you! And on top of that, I give a large amount of money to different charities each month, probably more than you make in a year!"  

Needless to say, she got a stricken look on her face and flipped a u-turn. lol And again, I've lost my faith in humanity and question my career choice.....

Brother I'm right there with you - I lived in Ithaca, NY, for almost a decade and saw it for myself almost every single day.  Ithaca is Boulder-East.  It's also the town that was so liberal that that the Democrat candidates generally lost out to the Socialist party candidates.  In fact the mayor was a socialist for years.

I had one of those hippie types start screaming at me for buying disposable diapers - why she was in the diaper section I don't know - but I let her go on for a few second until she had driven herself into a saliva spewing frenzy and calmly said, "it's OK, I planted two trees and changed my lightbulbs to CFLs to offset my carbon footprint."  She was still pissed, but what could she say since I turned her argument against her.

Then there was the guy that practically burst into tears when I pointed out to him that my brand new Ford Explorer actually got better gas mileage than his 1988 busted assed Taurus.

Gotta love 'em.

HA! I didn't know there was another place here in the US that was Boulders "twin!" Your response to the lady was hilarious! Back in High School I made the mistake of switching to a school in Boulder and it was absolutely terrible! Me, and the 4 other people from outside of Boulder felt so attacked and couldn't stand the hippie nonsense, that we designated our cars as "Boulder Free Zones" lol Every break we'd rush to one of our cars and sit and vent about the absolute rubbish we'd witnessed the previous period!

Plus, in high school, I drove a 1968 Camaro SS that my father and I put countless hours into. It had a 427ci, with an 8-71 blower and straight pipe exhaust, it accomplished an astonishing 6mpg! lol Needless to say my car didn't fit in, and I got in sooo many fights with the hippies. I used to drive by the smoking section of my school and do a MASSIVE burn-out just to watch the hippies scream. I'm not sure why every hippie at that school smoked but, they actually complained to the dean of the school and said "Something needs to be done with Jordan! He's doing burn-outs in his car right in front of the smoking section! We don't want to breathe in that smoke! It's soo bad for us!" So, I got called into the deans office with the complainants and they said this so my retort was, " Wait a minute! It's ok for 98% of the school, including staff, to go to one section and smoke like chimneys yet if I do a burn out in that area that's not!?"  Awe the hypocrisy of them!  Anyway, good stories man! Needed a laugh.

This is too funny. I too feel the same way. I live in boulder-south (just north of Atlanta, GA) lol. For years the county I live in was all white and coming from the north, I found that the native folk here were a bit racist. It never ceases to amaze me the ignorance of people in this day and age. Needless to say, things have changed in this county, but there are still a few holdouts from a more "simple" time. I would hazard a guess that no matter where you go in this world, you will find some degree of stupidity. Fortunately, the people who served this country, including myself, have learned that it isn't the color of your skin, or the clothes you wear, or even the car you drive that make you ignorant. Its the intolerance for those who love the freedom they were  born with in this great country. Unfortunately, even the intolerant idiots have their 1st amendment rights...lol. thanks for the laugh, and thank you for your service.

As far as lasers on ships.... great!!!! its about damn time. Wouldn't hurt to put them on the Air Force planes as well... just saying....lol

Air Force.... I've been to a lot of crazy places, believe me. But, I believe ignorance is pretty much wide-spread. Some places are worse than others and in different ways. I always tell everyone, I can deal with a little BS, but I have no tolerance for stupidity....lol. lucky me.... i,m a member of the dumbest species on earth....lmao.

These have actually been around for a while now in testing.  I saw a video years ago of a lazer shooting down a target drone with the intention of making it some sort of anti-missile weapon.  They are really expensive to make, but as they don't use ammo the pay for themselves eventually.

I remember reading years ago that LASER weapons could be thwarted by mirroring the surfaces of ships, rockets, etc. Or in the case of a rocket, making it spin to attenuate the heat produced by the LASER. Since light colors reflect light and dark colors absorb light, it might only take painting something stark bright white to offer some protection against such weapons, but I may be way off base here not knowing current technology.

Im no expert but there are still people out there with no clothes, no food, no fresh clean water and are rather sick to boot.

Instead of making and discovering new ways to blow each other up. Why not put more resources into finding a new form of energy and ending the pain and suffering in 3rd world countries as well as putting real effort into sorting out the the financial, no job etc etc. aka recession. Im sure a few of you are aware of Irelands situation.

Anyway, things will never change.

The mirroring would have to be tailored to the wavelength of the laser itself.

Each "layer" in a surface essentially has a certain reflection and transmission coefficient. A certain amount of light will be reflected, and the rest will penetrate through it. In terms of mirrors you and I use, the reflection coefficient is quite large, meaning that almost all of the light is reflected by the first few layers in the mirror. The reflection and transmission coefficients, however, are dependent on the wavelengths of the light, meaning that certain wavelengths of light may be highly reflected, but others aren't. The mirrors we use are highly reflective for visible light, but not necessarily so for other parts of the spectrum.

Hybrid89 I don't mean to sound as though I'm preaching to you but some things just have to be said.  It's human nature that causes those needs to be left unmet.  The truth is that we live in a world where if you aren't able to defend yourself and those you love there are plenty of people who will gladly kill you for what you have or just because you don't pray to their god.
It has always been this way and while I believe the day will come when the change you want will arrive, I think it will only be after we come very close to extinction as a species.
