Don't worry- once 2012 is past this will all be over. I've been waiting for December 2012 for years just to watch the reaction when nothing happens. FINALLY we can stop talking about it. This board will even have to change its name!

Kids and young people, AND adults alike are getting suicidal over this, some of them have actually tried and/or succeeded in committing suicide because of this hoax.

Not every topic mentioning 2012 in this forum is negative. There are a few post with scientific and credible evidence that maybe a disraught or suicidal kid, teen, or adult could turn to and find relief.

Oh heavens,2012 is a well debunked HOAX. Infact I sadly wouldn't have joined this forum if I was aware at the time there was a section giving this this utter poo poo (being as I probably can't swear here) credability in the slightest. I'm not going to even bother sharing my basic knowledge of astronomy, solar physics & other sciences, because it will probably fall on deaf ears.

Kids and young people, AND adults alike are getting suicidal over this, some of them have actually tried and/or succeeded in committing suicide because of this hoax.

There NO rise in 'freak storms' or 'oddities', these are things which have always happened, earthquakes have always happened, tornados have always happened, tsunamis have always happened, solar flairs...you guessed it, have always happened. There is nothing special about 2012, and anyone saying there is is most probably seeking MONEY. There are no 2012 proponent sites on the web that don't have a 'book'or a 'dvd' for sale, usually touting how to survive the apocalypse blah blah. It was the same in 2000 with the Y2K scare, what happened, nothing, no nuclear meltdowns, no computers on the rampage, nothing. Fear sells books,DVDs, and most amusing of all, camping supplies! Don't fall for it, don't be lead into the hoax by woo artists chasing your cash.

Don't even think about using youtube or many other video sites as a reliable source of FACT on this topic, we can all cut and paste and use basic photo manipulation programs to stick rogue planets in the sky, mock up a weird cloud formation or a dragon fluttering in the clouds. There is NO scientific fact behind ANY of the 2012 doom theories.

Don't even get me started on the Mayan 'prediction' stuff. To cut it very short, the Mayans were a civilisation that belived in human sacrifice, drinking blood and worshipping gods that looked like crocodiles stuck on top of bears. They were good astronomers yes, but they did not have the tech we do to reach beyond the night sky and view deep space, and be able to predict asteroid flybys, study solar activity or anything even close to that. The long count calandar round, which is at the very heart of the 2012 hoax, is a very primative calandar that had little purpose outside planning ahead for planting crops, religious celebrations, crownings, gods ascending etc.

Aliens have not visited our ancient ancestors either, humanity evolved from apes, to claim otherwise would mean Darwin was wrong, and that hundreds of yearsof research may as well be flushed, it ain't gonna happen and I ain't gonna buy it.

There is a scientific reason, or perhaps even a paranormal reason such as clairaudinance for some people hearing sounds, tintinus, a medical condition which causes ringing in the ears is another example, is a possible cause. It can come on after attending loud rock concerts even, and take people by a nasty surprise, you may not even know you have it.

I believe in spirits, they've been with us for all time, ghosts yes, aliens yes within reason, and most other paranormal stuff, but I draw the line with the 2012 hoax because it is costing people money when they get caught in the scams which say if you donate another £100 you'll get 'vital survival information' or access to a secret bunker and that yadda, and sadly, people are committing suicide.

When the stupid date comes, and goes, and we enter 2013 without so much as a bug belching, perhaps the woo artists will decide it's time to check in with that psychiatrist after all!

That is cutting it very short indeed and it appears your synopsis on Mayan civilization was taken from Mel Gibson´s movie! I really tvink you need to keep in mind:

"[O]ur knowledge of ancient Maya thought must represent only a tiny fraction of the whole picture, for of the thousands of books in which the full extent of their learning and ritual was recorded, only four have survived to modern times (as though all that posterity knew of ourselves were to be based upon three prayer books and 'Pilgrim's Progress')." (Michael D. Coe, The Maya, London: Thames and Hudson, 4th ed., 1987, p. 161.

And you really shouldn´t start on the Mayan prediction thing because the Mayans never did nor do predict an "end-of-world" scenario for that date to the best of my knowledge.
IMO, For their time, they showed brilliance in their art, math, architecture as well as astronomy just to name a few areas. Looking at any cultures belief system and rituals hundreds of years later and then using some of the more extreme examples to characterize their entire contribution is not really fair.

If you´re all pissed-off at this whole 21/12/12 thing, don´t blame the Mayans for it.

I would point out that i am not a believer of the 23 enigma which is linked with the 2012 hoax. But i would like to point out that on the 14 day of the 04 month 2012. Piermario Morosini the Italian footballer died. 14 + 4 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 23. I would also point out that things like this enigma being pointed out to people so persuasively would cause more people to look for the same coincidences in every day life. My friend added his full names letters up to 23 also . They predict the world ending on the 23 of december. But nothing is fact only opinion even religion as far as im concerned

Did Y2K happen? No, but the IT industry we all know today was forged on the PROFITS churned over in just a couple of years as people scurried to make sure their home and business systems were 'Y2K safe' or whatever. It made the industry billions, and caused a boom in the IT industry.

First of all, yes, Y2K did happen.  It wasn't a catastrophe but minor blackouts and system outtages did occur.  Fortunately most systems had been corrected by then.  Your arguments against it sound like many I heard at the time it was happening, from people who didn't understand how computers worked or in other words they didn't understand that a computer can only operate on the information it is given.   It is basically several thousand calculators appearing to perform very complex calculations while really only doing massive quantities of simple calculations in the right order.   The IT boom happened because people wanted technology, and found it useful, and started buying it like hotcakes.

Second, anyone who commits suicide over 2012 or any other doomsday prediction was already fragile and needed help.  2012 does not have the magical power to drive average rational people to suicide or we'd have seen so many happening that it would have put a dent in the population figures... like A THIRD of the population of earth dead.

I know no one wants to be angry at a person who commits suicide, but the fact is that they killed themselves rather than face an unforseen future event which tells me there must have been other things going on in their lives that made them feel it wasn't worth living.  Posting on a forum isn't doing anyone any good except for you, because it's allowing you to vent over something that clearly upsets you.

Yeah, 2014 is in line for a few as well. I'm researching Aztecs because the 2014 one has something to do with the Aztec calendar 'ending' or whatever, so by then I should be ready and set for debunking that one. It makes me laugh when Christians start using the bible as 'proof' and totally forget the bit where Jesus says 'only the father knows the day and the hour', meaning nobody knows when the world will come to an end. I have my own theory if you want to bring god into it as the creator, that he created the Earth, and he created stars, so he will know how long stars burn for, eventually our sun will use up it's natural gasses and become a dying star, swelling so much that it engulfs much of the solar system. This is probably what god has in mind, the eventual, natural end of the planet, but perhaps not humans, because we may well develop means to travel across wide parts of space to seek out new, habitable planets long before then.

'Prophecies' as they are so called are just a mind game made up of a few words, I could make one up now, like 'On this day you will see a red bus, and the driver will be wearing a green cap' one day, you will see a red bus, and the driver will indeed be wearing a green cap. The terms of a so called 'prophecy' are so wide and so open to allsorts of interpretation that believing it seriously is about as useful as a car with no engine.

If anyone actually researched the stupid theories, you'll find most of it stems for a 60s hippy LSD user called Zacharia Sitchin, who coined the 'Nibiru' hoax, claiming a red rogue planet was going to appear and cause havock on Earth, if it was, it would be 10 times the size of the moon by now! It's all very stupid, and can easily be debunked with as little as 5 minutes research.

2012 will be a very eventful year but it is not the end of the world for most, however it is the beginning of the end. It's the start of short 4 - 9 years countdown.

The end of anyones world can happen at anytime, all you need to do is cross the street without looking and have a day dreaming city bus driver not see you in time.

When it is time to go, is time to go. So enjoy the time you have.

Worring about tommorrow only drains the hope of today. Yes be wise and plan for the future, this incuding a future with the possiblity of problems. However do what you can to plan then let the stress go knowing you have done what you can and can do no more. Then get back to enjoying life.

I feel the same way about the Mayan death clock as I do about the hundredth anniversary of the Titanic sinking......

.......I'm just bloody glad it over. I swear if I see another fricking gratuitous show about how the Titanic sank and what really, really, really actually happened, finally solved for the last time.........I'm ready to scream. Yes, it was a terrible tragity, yes, there was a terrible loss of life, yes, it could have been avoided, yes, it was due largely to human error both in design, fabrication and command level decisions by the Captain who bowed to pressures from the the guys in suits who knew nothing about icebergs or piloting a ship at sea.

I hope upon hope that when James fricking Cameron dies they wrap him up in a hammock and plop him on what is left of the bridge of the rotting carcass of that ship.

I have to agree. The world ends every second of every day, with hundreds of thousands of humans coming to the end of their natural lifespans, and passing away. The world also begins a new each second of each day with the arrival of new babies all across the world. So the cycle of death and rebirth does exist, it exists all around us each second of each day, when you see a funeral procession pass you by or hear the screams of a newborn infant, that's the cycle of death and rebirth in action all around us.

I do give psychics some credence, however, I think many who 'can't see past 2012' may either die themselves this year from age, disease or other causes, or simply be chipping in on the hoax as a way to raise their profile among proponents and make a bit of extra cash.

There will be a 'doom date' several times a year every year of our lives, it's up to us not to jump on the bandwagon and increase the size of people's bank balences. Don't buy the material, don't fal for the hoax. I will go with what Jesus said, that only god knows the day and the hour, and get on with my life knowing that I am not spending it falling for internet scams.

Rememner Y2K? omg computers were supposed to go terminator on us, causing nuclear meltdowns across the world, causing planes to fall from the sky, sattelites to fall from space, the internet to blip out of existance, cars to crash into each other in the street, the electronic doors at zoos to open and let all the tigers and lions out, it got more stupid by the day. Even my mum fell for this one, by taking our home PC into the shop to get it made 'Y2K compliant' so it didn't join the rebellion!

Y2K came and went, then I was an ill educated kid about to learn a hard lesson about believing doomsday hype. I stood by the window at 5 minutes to midnight, not waiting for the fireworks, but waiting for the planes to fall, for the fires, for the power to go out, for the screaming people, for the computer army marching down the street shooting people down with floppy discs etc etc, midnight came, it went, the lights stayed on, the world carried on. Now we have an IT industry that got filthy rich on the back of the Y2K hoax, with many so called reputable companies pushing it too to scare customers. I would say Y2K was WORSE than 2012, much worse, because it was publically acceptable, it was advertised on the back of busses 'GET Y2K COMPLIANT NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE' etc. 2012 is thankfully mainly an internet hoax, with hardly anyone away from internet communities taking it seriously at all. This is the age of the internet, and when something starts spreading online, it spreads faster than a wildfire started from a cigarette in dry grass. When proponents see a potential of the hoax to rake in the dollars, then the books, DVDs, camping matetials, non existant places in non existant bunkers etc start going up for sale. They forget that the scenarios they are suggesting would happen, such as a shift of Earth's rotational poles (SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE, and frequently muddled up with a magnetic polar shift, which does happen, but takes many thousands of years to complete and has no consequences for the Earth and humans other than having to alter our compasses in a few thousand years time, it's so slow even migratory animals wouldn't notice the change), is unsurvivable, at least for humans and most other specise, so bunkers, books and camping equipment would be useless anyway! See what I mean, they're trying so hard to sell their hype that they are totally missing any fundemental points, nevermind scientific fact!

Wise up, wake up and don't be scammed. If anyone wants some basic assistance with Mayan histroy, I can certainly help as I have done hours of research to help on the other forum I belong to, where we provide terrified people with the SCIENCE and the FACTS surrounding any doomsday hoax.

Just like lots of people WILL DIE this year, from disease, from old age, and there will be lots of NATURAL DISASTERS too, but this happens all the time, every year, it's not the end of the world. I know minor things did happen on the millenium eve yes, but certainly not on the scale predicted. That's like there being an Earthquake sometime this year, everyone will jump in and say 'hey it's 2012', just like those kinds of computer glitches can happen any time.
