Environment Minister Alex Attwood has said what appears to be a submarine or boat has been identified submerged in Lough Foyle.

Mr Attwood said he had viewed sonar images of the vessel.

"I have asked that urgent work is undertaken to determine how and when the submarine or boat came to rest in this part of the lough.

"It is unusual that there appears to be no record of the circumstances behind this situation," he said.

Interesting-if its a sub it must have limped in damaged for cover and found it was beyond repair.Be interesting to see if it is a war grave or if the sailors escaped off into Ireland.

Needn't necessarily be too much of a mystery; a lot of the U-boats that surrendered at the end of the war were assembled in Lough Foyle while they decided what to do with them. In the end, they sank most of them. In fact, quite a few of them sank before they could deal with them.

Life is a hideous business, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous.

U-Boats that Surrendered - Operation Pledge

Operation Pledge filled the gap between the surrender of the U-Boats in Europe in May 1945 and their final disposal in either Operation Deadlight  or their allocation to the three Allies (UK, USA and USSR). Thus it  covered the transfer of the U-Boats which surrendered, either from sea  or in port, to the Royal Naval anchorages in Lough Foyle in Northern  Ireland and Loch Ryan in south west Scotland. ....................

Not sure what the depth is there, but one would think the easiest thing to do would be to dive on the damned thing and see what it is.
