The Shag Harbour UFO/USO case is a pretty intriguing one and there's a good documentary about it below, there's also a pdf file featuring reports and newspaper clippings about the incident.

One of the most extraordinary, UFO encounters of the twentieth century occurred in the tiny fishing community of Shag Harbor on the southern tip of Nova Scotia. This event, while relatively obscure in the sense of public awareness, is one of the most thoroughly and officially documented UFO encounters of the last 30 years, and is easily as sensational and as mystifying as the famous Roswell incident..

After about five minutes, the object started to sink beneath the icy North Atlantic waves. A few of the eyewitnesses reported hearing a "whooshing" noise. While the RCMP had already been in communication with the Canadian Cost Guard and Cutter 101 was on the way, two of the RCMP officers and a few local fisherman hurriedly launched their boats to speed to the rescue of any survivors. As the small boats, and Cutter 101 reached the location, the lights were no longer visible but they found themselves sailing through a thick yellow foam, that indicated that something had submerged. The fisherman report that the foam was not sea foam, and looked like nothing they had ever seen. In fact most were unnerved by the fact that they had to sail through it to look for survivors.

I remember watching a show about this on TV.  I found it very interesting and convincing.  Just wish we could come up with solid proof that you could point at and say this is it.

Hilander, don't we all mate - unequivocable proof as to the true nature of UFOs would be very nice but as it stands there is none.

There does exist credible government documentary evidence, credible radar evidence, credible electromagnetic interference evidence, credible ground trace evidence and credible (circumstantial) evidence in the form of sworn eyewitness testimony from 1000's of credible individuals to show something is going on...it's just what that something is that's the big question.

Like you, I've also always found the Shag Harbour incident very interesting and there are more documents at the link below from the police and Canadian Maritime Command.

Still classified as an unknown by the Canadian Air Force and by the Condon Committee report.  The military knew almost immediately that it wasn't a plane crash because none were reported missing, while the behavior of the underwater objects was anything but conventional.

The years 1966-67 were the second greatest UFO wave in history, exceeded only by 1952, and in those two years combined there were even more sightings than in 1952.

As to why UFOs appear in waves like this, your guess is as good as mine.

Here's another Shag Harbor documentary, that starts with the fishermen seeing the yellow foam on the water, and then the Coast Guard being called in, but no military or civilian aircraft being reported missing.

Then the navy showed up, as well as a top secret Canadian unit that investigated UFOs, and at that point the official cooperation began to diminish.  No one at that time or later claimed that it was anything but a UFO.

This documentary notes that the US and Canadian navies were sittting above two UFOs on the sea floor, taking pictures and measurements, sending down divers and so on, and then when a Russian submarine moved in to try to find out what they were doing there, they chased it off while the UFOs moved away and finally flew back out to wherever they came from.

You are right about many things, karl, sadly this is one of those times. All we can do is speculate about the origin.
I still await the compelling Exhibit A.
