All I know is that the Jersy Devil supposedly dwells in the pine barrens of New Jersey. The creature/demon was a result of a curse. Back in colonial times a local woman (purported to have some dealing with the Devil) cursed her own child...and it was born a demon. People have been claiming to see the Jersey Devil for hunderds of years. However, there's never been any solid evidence of its existence. I highly suspect this is simply a local legend.

I'm pretty sure you can look up all sorts of information on this legend quite easily.

Illegal immigration isn't a new concept in the US. Just ask the Native Americans.

The Jersey Devil is my most favourite cryptid. Anyway most stories go with this one that the Jersey Devil has been around since the early 18th Century in the year 1735. They say Mother Leeds had 12 kids and then was pregnant with her 13th Child and one stormy night in the house while giving birth she said to let this one be a devil and when it was born. The baby transformed into the creature and slaughtered everyone in the room before flying up the chiminey into the Pine Barrens. To this very day they still say the Jersey Devil is still alive and sightings still occur to this very day.

I also hear sometime in 1909. Schools were shut down and people stayed in their houses, when sightings of the creature were seen alot. Another legend also says that Stephen Decatur sighted the Jersey Devil and fired a cannonball at it only there was no effect on the creature. That's all I know. If I know more. I'll tell you TheLostProphet14.

You're correct, witches were not burned as it was not a religious offence (as that would be unconstitutional in America)

It looks like flight attempts would be comical.

The Jersey Devil is said to be a creature with a head like a collie dog, a face and body like horse, the feet of a goat, the wings of a bat, and a long serpent-like tail. The legend of The Jersey Devil is older than the US dating back to a native american myth. Since then many trustable people, priests, city counsel men, even Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, have seen the creature.

The story that I've always heard is that a woman back in colonial times (like Ms. Lilly's version) cursed her 7th child in a bedside prayer to the devil, for some ungoshly reason. When it was born, it came out as a perfect human child, but within minutes it began to deform, grow horns, hooves, and wings. Then it flew out the chimney.

I watched a MonsterQuest (I know, its MonsterQuest, but I find the show interesting, even if they never get footage) episode for the Jersey Devil, and there was a story about a woman who walked out to turn on or off some fairy lights  in Winter with her son at night, and when they turned around and began to walk back across the yard into the house, they heard and felt this huge thing swoop over their heads onto the roof from a tree that they were just under. It then began to clammer down the roof toward them. They managed to get inside, and they still heard the clammering that sounded like hooves against metal for about 10 minutes, then it stopped.

They walked out in the morning and they saw tracks like those of a deer up and down the roof. Police investigated and never came to a conclusion.

I have friends who live down there, and have combed those woods for years as kids. Ones a rockstar actually ,and he told me a story about a bunch of Hells Angels, who had the ever lovin crap scared out of them by something...
They would go into the woods and build fires at night, and a bunch were hanging out having a beer, and they all saw...something.
None of them will go in the woods anymore, and if you know anything about Hells Angels ,thats unbelievable .

I think this is one of the weakest cryptid ever. Just look at the list of alleged sightings, none of them are very credible to me. I've read the list of all sightings going back to the 1700's, sorry, there's absolutely nothing showing me that the stories are true. I think this is clearly a case of people believing in an old legend. The legend started in the 1700's, it stuck and now the legend is....well, legendary in the NJ area. Now a lot of people automatically assume that the Jersey Devil is real everytime they see something "mysterious" or something they can't understand. I'm not saying people are stupid, I'm saying that some people are ready to believe anything. Why ? Because it's fun, makes life a lot more exciting.

For a full list of alleged sightings: http://www.njdevilhu.../sightings.html

Funny how the people who made the website are calling themselves "Devil Hunters". Yeah, right. Whatever.
