I live in Christchurch and the only volcano here has been dead for almost 1.5 million years thank you. Earthquakes are our main problem here

Yes we have had our fair share of earthquakes in the past year but volcanos? news to me..

If by volcano you mean liqufaction mounds then yes we have had a fair chunk of those but that is directly asociated with earthquake activity and not vulcanisum persay.

And fool you in what way? the do grow they waky tobacky down here as well  but inside for the most part I would guess as it gets very cold over winter.

As for snow fall here in Christchurch city it is never a sure thing due to our close aproximation to the sea and that Banks Perninsular (the dead volcano) tends to funnel that sort of weather out to sea.

They found a new vacation spot!

I could not blame them. Great decision in my book.

OF course the above pics are from the South Island, but all the same, if I was an Alien, I would not miss NZ on a trip to earth!

Queenstown ... nice place but bloody exspensive to live there or stay for that matter.

Hi Stoneheart!

Yes, I mean earthquakes caused by the volcanic activity on the rim ;) Thank you for the clarification but I did not actually say "A Volcano" but "volcanic activity" which keeps those on the rim of fire on their toes lately. I am very sorry to hear about the loss and damage and wish you determined battlers well.

I have a place in Queenstown, but I live in Oz, I hope to become an NZ citizen in a few years, I want to move there when I retire. I love the place immensely, the people, the country, the food, it's all just awesome. I envy you in many ways.

It was just a tongue in cheek joke, he said North people are on Drugs, you said you are in the South, I was joking around and saying do not fool us, you are from the South, that does not stop people in the North
You will get used to me, no offence, just a bit of lighthearted banter from nearby Oz ;)

Nearly though we were going to miss out in Queenstown last year, then BOOM, 3 foot of snow knocked my gutters down! You better book ski time in Queenstown if that is the case :D I have not spent much time at Christchurch, just in and out of the airport, would love to see and experiance it. Milford was dead set mind blowing. I went on a rainy day, and that it seems is the best time to visit Milford Sound.

And I must excuse my manners, may I offer a warm welcome to UM. I hope you enjoy it here.

Cheers.

I found it super cheap by comparison to Australia. About 20% all round. Credit card shopping is great, yo get back here and a 1000 bill sets you back about 800 bucks. I love it.

And, looking at the place, it seems rather worth it :D All the sports would help to create a more competitive economy. Best Mountain Bike tracks in the world I have been told. Skiing, hiking, it is just a wonderland, and no deadly wildlife! Awesome! My country tries to kill it's residents! (Oz) Queenstown is quite a bit like Canada I am led to believe (so several American tourists have told me), but much less cost.

hahahaha all good .. I love that part of NZ and go there often while I travel for work... costs an arm and a leg and maybe your first born to own a place down there.

The weather patterns here in the city as I say can be hit and miss as the city is in fact in a low laying area that was once upon a time a swamp... having said that we had one hell of a snow full last year and I get the feeling we will be hit with the same this year...

Could do without it as I am not sure I really trust the roof to hold that snow up after all the quakes.

Thank you for the welcom.. I have been lurking in the shadows for a long time :tu:

Mate, I envy you yet again, next to Australia, Queenstown is great. I live on the Gold Coast over here, it is pretty expensive next to lovely Queenstown. My place was cheaper than what I could buy over here. For the same dollars, a view of Lake Wakatipu beats staring at a highway. I went to the North Island some years ago as well, I travelled from Auckland down to Rotarua, then down past Taupo, across to Gisborn, and back through the gorge to Rotarua, and back to Auckland to fly out. But is was so long ago I do not remember the cost of living, I remember I thought fuel was dear though.

I hope you guys get a good fall this year, last year the ski instructors were begging when the snow came so late.

But of course, not too good so that it wrecks things. I hope I can get over there for some skiing this year.

You are most welcome, I always like to think of us (NZ and Oz) as cousins, and I have quite a few good Kiwi Friends. I hope we will get along famously as well :D

But I guess we best get back to the sightings before we get a slap on the wrist from a mod. There was a thread about a year ago, I remember it was about the time I saw something over there, perhaps where the OP's article quotes that skeptic who says this is all very recent, might be quite incorrect?

I have been on the caves boat trip myself and the one on the Nile river (NZ it is on the west coast  ) crazy fun trip that.

I am sure personally that 90% plus sightings can be put down to explainable things but I have talked to a few locals who have been seeing very odd lights in the sky as of late.. not sure what to think but I keep an open mind.

One of the things to bear in mind and I would welcome expert advice on this; I would think that NZ airspace is not as busy as say the UK or US?  Being in a more isolated part of the world how does it actually compare?  So a rash of unidentified lights may in fact warrant serious consideration for that reason.

Depends on the part of the country, time and weather conditions. Auckland would be the busiest by far but where I live (smack bang in the middle of the country), there are some aircraft in the skies, mostly jets on late night domestic/international flights, night-flights for pilot training and mail aircraft. Not in the same numbers as other countries, but if there was to be a UFO hovering around whichever part of the country, there would be at least one aircraft airbourne to notice it.

If the Americans have increased their presence in Antartica, would that mean that there would be an increase in activity over the South Island, not on the other side of the country.
