Scientists have uncovered new evidence that mysterious remains found in an ancient reliquary in a 5th century monastery on Sveti Ivan Island in Bulgaria belong to St John the Baptist.

The remains - small fragments of a skull, bones from a jaw and an arm, and a tooth - were discovered embedded in an altar in the ruins of the ancient monastery, on the island in the Black Sea.

But after the find two years ago was met with universal scepticism Oxford University archaeologists undertook carbon dating tests.

On Thursday, the team announced they have provided scientific evidence to support the extraordinary claim. The findings are to be presented in a documentary to be aired on The National Geographic channel in Britain on Sunday.

So archeologists found 1st century bones that doesn't make them the bones of the Baptist.  There are other evidences that had him burried in Qumran (a place that would  be more logical) but assuming the man had been beheaded by Herod, he would have received the same treatment other criminals of the day, a body decaying on the walls of the city and the head on pike somewhere else, and no one touching either in fear of meeting a similar end.

Yeah, how does this in any way definitively tie this to "John the Baptist" ?
Maybe I read the article wrong, but I didn't see any evidence.
If there is some "same time period" inscription or such connecting those bone fragments to him, I must have missed it.

What's your problem?

Still Waters posts a lot of articles around here to share with others.  That doesn't mean she believes all of them.  And even if she did believe this one she hasn't indicated that one way or the other.

Edit to remove last line which was a bit over the top.

Watched the program on this last night. apparently the bones were found in a stone box( marble?) which would have been quite expensive to have made. They were then burried under a very early church, nearby a smaller box was discovered that had an inscription that said something like  " have mercy on thy servant Thomas?" and ".................St John" The bones were supposedly buried well before the medieval relic boom. Not conclusive proof, but a lot better than most of the relics we have.
