With all the money wasted on useless sculptures up and down the country, these poor people have had to wait so long for the recognition that they fully deserve....

That's disgraceful how it's taken so long.

Also the writing on it is all about the Queen and her stupid jubilee. FFS

It should mention them not the Queen. I find that self obsessed and disrespectful.

On the bright side, there is definitly something poetic and beautiful about the lancaster bomber dropping the poppies. It looks amazing.

"Bomber" Harris would be pleased, finally.  I think it disgraceful that the contribution of these brave airmen who died in such horrific numbers were not honored before now.  They did a dirty, thankless job and then were shunned by the government that made them do it.
WWII was the "adolescence" of our education in the means of mass death as well as the refinement of our psyches in the acceptance of it's "necessity".  I wonder where the coming new lessons will take us.

Yip all the plaques and writing is actually about the men and woman who deserve it. That's how it should be.

The statue itself is not the memorial. All the names of the fallen aircrew and a dedication to them are carved in the walls of the memorial building that houses it. And remember, HM is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

I think the most important message is...without the brave souls who fought in the theaters of WW2 and WW1,most of us here would not be typing on our computers..it is a disgrace that this monument took so long to be built....and now..i'll shut up..

I grew up reading of the exploits of the RAF and Bomber Command as well as the US air effort in England.  I don't know if the revisionists have been at work on some reputations but Arthur Harris seemed like a TOUGH S.O.B. and hard nosed commander who didn't allow sentiment of losing crews and aircraft dissuade him from doing as he thought was right.  Many vilify him (and the USAAF) over the Dresden missions but I think he was correct in his doctrine of total war.  The Luftwaffe certainly had no problem with incinerating London and Coventry.  Once war is begun the primary objective must be to end it as quickly as possible and unfortunately that requires breaking an enemy's SPIRIT as well as his arms.  I say again, God bless all the young men who never came home as well as those who never completely came home.

That's fair enough, however I don't care what HM's position is unless she had done her part. She didn't. The royal family get no respect from me. In my opion her name or mention should not have been made the center of attention.

I don't think it's anything to do with us whether the queen is mentioned or not, it's the business of those that were there, their families, and the military they served for. (imho)

I disagree, Scanner.

It's "our" Memorial.

Well I know damn fine that my Great Grandfather would be disgusted by it and he spent time in 3 POW camps... He came homw skin and bones, it jsut tore the soul out of him and eventually he died. What did anyone fromt eh Royal Family do? Oh that's right they where enjoying tea and crumpets daily and probably making a huge profit from the war.

I view these things much like a headstone on a grave, it's nice for me to able to go there and have something to connect too, but as to what is written on it it's not my business, but the business of those immediately connected.

I went to a where a few concentration camps used to be when i was in Germany...man they are sombre places and with good reason.Your GGfather probably went through hell for us and then ended up in a POW camp(along with the other many, many, many thousands)I would like to thank him for what he did for our generation and our country..
