Residents from Chula Vista to Oceanside reported a large rumble around 12:45 p.m. Friday.
The mysterious sensation was described by some people as sounding like a door slamming while others said it was strong enough to rattle windows.
A check of the U.S. Geological Survey website showed no earthquake activity.

The mysterious sound had both residents and experts scratching their heads. Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist Kristoffer Walker said he felt it too, and looked into microphones recorded from MCAS Miramar.

Evidence from his research revealed an answer.

Quote

"There was indeed an atmospheric tremor, or 'skyquake,'" Walker said. "The likely cause of these 'skyquakes' is routine military activity very far off the coast of San Diego (at least 50 miles away) in zones that are designated military training zones."

Skyquakes?

First I have heard of this phenomenon.

How can it be a 'skyquake' if the military is doing some 'testing' off shore?  If we make a big noise in our neighbourhood, we don't get to use the excuse that it was just another 'skyquake'.  It's really that the military is doing something they probably shouldn't be.

So skyquakes are simply planes breaking the sound barrier?

I remember hearing the booms as a kid, we were told it was  planes breaking the sound barrier over Lake Erie.

I cant see what the problem is here.
If the military are holding an exercise in an area where they are designated to do so, then all is ok. If the wind is blowing in the right direction, the sound of live shells being fired will be heard for miles.
It does not mean they are doing something that they should not be doing. All countries hold these exercises. It is the only way to train their military and to test new weapons. :)

Yes, I lived less than a mile from Lake Erie in the 60's and 70's.
Yes, we heard them a few times, at least, too.
We could also hear the super fast boats on the lake too. I think they were called banana boats?

Hi Psychic spy.  My point was that if it's just the military doing what they normally do, why call it a 'skyquake'?  Why not say it's the military doing some testing.  It just makes me think they're up to things no one knows about.  Actually, I think if they are going to do something that makes enough noise that a whole county will wonder what it is and where it's coming from, the military should just give them a heads up about some unexpected noise.
