How in anyway is the NHS targeted Americans? NHS was a British trust set up after the war. Today we all know the NHS is rubbish and screwed but it represents British past time and British culture.

Sorry Acid, but that's just a bit paranoid of you.
It's the Poms being proud of "the welfare state" that's all, it'd be like a massive declaration of independence at an American olympics or rotary hoists and victa motormowers at the Sydney Olympics, a bit of "yeah us!" propaganda, not "America, you suck because you don't have socialised medicine" propaganda.

It's pretty arrogant to think that the organizers were thinking about the US and how best to influence them, while setting up a show about British culture and history.

Well, first because there are some people who are convinced that, no matter what happens, it is all because some are against America. But that should not come as surprising because, according to most Americans, if you don't dose your head in Vaseline and climb up America's butt you are also anti-American.

Having said that, I believe that Britain has all the right in the world to celebrate one of its biggest achievements: The healthiest generation of Britons that ever was on the planet. Something America is far away from. And the realization of that fact is what hurts, not the opening ceremony.

believe it or not, in the UK the National Health Service is an almost universally admired institution in the UK, whatever perfectly valid criticisms people may have of its organsiation and administration. It is merely paying recognition to this fact, and (I know this may be a difficult thing to grasp) is not necessarily targeted at Americans, since not everything in the world is, necessarily.

Life is a hideous business, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous.

Heavens, a gallery of Nurse uniforms? That's one to browse later.... :)

Yes, i presume the idea was to celebrate the history of the NHS and so on, hence the retro uniforms.

The NHS is a source of tremendous national pride for Brits and a model for the entire world for how this CAN be done.
Even our current right-wing, budget slashing, austerity obcessed Tory government knows what a special place the NHS has in the hearts of the British.

To suggest that our celebrating this 'national treasure' is progaganda aimed at Americans is laughable right wing paranoia of the most absurd kind.
