A staple of wildlife photographers and Sunday-night nature programmes, the flying squirrel is one of the most exquisite examples of evolution.

But if this video's anything to go by, its less refined relations are determined to defy natural selection... and gravity.

Instead of gliding effortlessly from tree to tree, this red squirrel hurls itself out of a window and plummets four storeys to the yard below.

He must be a relative of Suicide Squirrel, who keeps running in front of my car.  (No fatalities yet).
