I wouldn't worry about it. I've long had similar experiences to the friend of the OP.
Heck, it's 5:30 a.m. here and I'm just browsing the web for a while going back to sleep.
I've always kepy funny hours. I commonly wake up for a couple of hours in the middle of the night, read or browse the web befor going back to sleep. I make up for it by getting in an hour or two in the early evening and sleeping late at the weekends.
And as I am someone who regularly remembers dreams, experiences vivid dreaming and hypnagogic hallucinations, it's not uncommon for these 3-4am awakenings to coincide with vivid nightmares.
I think some of us just have odd sleep patterns combined with very vivid dreaming and related hallucinations. I personally love it. Makes night-time more interesting.
It sounds like he's trying or wants to find a supernatural explanation for what is probably just a combintion of insomnia or abnormal sleep patterns combined with the crazy things your mind gets up to during REM sleep and the sometimes vivid hallucinations in the transition from wakefulness to sleep (and vice versa).

I always awoke at 3 AM every morning as that is the time the store next door gets its deliveries and is also the time the street sweeper is cleaning the parking lot at the same store. The hum from the sweeper and the drone of the truck engines is very annoying. I also have had sleep latency because I always read in bed at night. Now I sleep with the radio on to drown out any of those sounds outside the house and sleep much better. If you go to bed at 9:30 or so and awaken at 3 AM, it could also be that you only require about 5 hours of sleep and will awaken after 5 hours no matter when you go to bed.
