Thousands of migrating birds have been dying before reaching Britain due to fog and high winds around the coast over the past week, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Fishermen have reported the deaths of many exhausted and disorientated "garden" birds plunging into the sea around their vessels, a spokesman for the RSPB said.
