With the introduction of the internet there has been a huge increase in the number of clubs, associations, organisations etc, related to the ET hypothesis for explaining UFO's. This appears to have generated an increase in TV shows related to it as well. Add into that the hype regarding 2012. There were a lot of newbies brought in due to the increase in interest. Simple CGI techniques and the advent or cool toys like quadrotors have led to a huge increase in pranksters pulling off hoaxes.
I think what's happening is that now that many people have seen all there is to offer, they are losing interest and dropping out.
