two days before thanksgiving
i drive to work
nervously eye the
gas guage
will i make it?
my last 3 bucks went in the tank
frantic mental math
miles per gallon
in moments like this
i admonish myself
"you should have bought ground chuck instead
of ground sirloin two weeks ago, idiot -
then you'd have money for gas now."
idiot
i remember the pack of
smokes
the 6 pack of beer
the two dollar pair of
thrift store
shoes.....
i could have done with out them
and i wouldnt feel like such an
idiot
miles tick away
what will happen first
run out of gas
or arrive?
keep driving
what will be will be
what will be will be
the realization
that i have no control
relaxes me
its all simple math now

"we wear out our worries"  that's what Wireman says...

I did make it to work - in case anyone wanted to know as Paul Harvey used to say "the rest of the story."  :tu:
