NASA has warned of the dangers in believing that the world is going to end later this month.

Live Science said:

NASA scientists took time on Wednesday (Nov. 28) to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

They should have done documentaries all over TV about how it's not the end of the world and why it's not.

Instead they run documentaries about the possibility and fill everyone's heads with zombies. Have you seriously seen the amount of zombie related things on TV just now?! I don't mean entertainment like The Walking dead. (which is great) I mean things like how to survive a zombie apocalypse and Darren Brown's Apocalypse thing. (which was utter rubbish)

When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Historically people panic when there is a major date change.  This was true of 2000 and 1000.  The churches did very well as we neared 1000 A.D.,  and sinners rushed to the churches with their jewels and last minute hopes to buy their way into heaven.

We know 2012 is the same kind of thing.  However, I agree with Coffey, that we should use our media to have a better educated public.

They shouldn't need to do documentaries, if anyone is that gulible that they actually think the world is going to end just because a civilisation hundreds of years ago stopped making a calander...then they don't deserve to be calmed down.

I think all this crap was made up knowing that there are gullible people out there who will buy stock in this event. Books, DVDs, Ammo and Prepper supplies will make record breaking sales.

People are literally like sheep (aparently) The ones that are to blame are the ones who popularized it. My finger points to natgeo and the history channel, channels that have been degrading themselves for years. For example: The Codex Gigas and the recently popular ancient aliens. They are all horse-poop

The only thing that "could" happen at the end of this year is the US going over the "fiscal cliff" :w00t:

But, yes, I agree that suscptable teens might have issues.

This reminds me of something I read, it goes like - Everyone is entitled to an opinion or a belief, but to an informed one at best. Nobody is entitled to be stupid. I am not sure if I always agree with it, but I sure think it is apt in the case of people getting affected by some tale of an apocalypse. Come to think of it, there could be people living in remote regions of Africa or maybe in the Middle-East or even in the Himalayas, who are blissfully unaware of any 'end of the world' scenario or even may not care if they know because they actually have a life, as when compared to people from 'civilized' and more developed countries, who go about propagating stuff about how the world's gonna end this year and how people could survive it (or maybe not) or perhaps they would evolve and 'ascend' into another dimension (yeah, that's possible, because we all believe in X-Men). I am not saying they're stupid, for that would be insensitive of me, but it's sad really...

Honestly, as sad as it is... People who kill themselves over this, wouldn't have lasted long anyway.

I wonder how many people think the world is going to end now that Hostess has stopped making twinkies?

The main fear now is not Dec.21 but which one of the crazy religious people will start WW3 . It took less to start WW1 and WW2 than what is happening now. The fuse is lit and we must find a way to stop it, with reason and not religious intolerance. I refer to christian, jews and muslims.

Why do i feel a teeny bit guilty? but i did laugh at this. Its the truth though! If they didn`t go this time round, they would go on the next "end of the world train"

In an ideal World a law would be passed were NO guns were allowed and all those out there destroyed, trouble is the law makers are not going to take a risk of trying to pass that without making sure they are armed first.

There are also those who believe in Reptilians, in Flat Earth, in Obamanomics, in UFOs, 9/11 conspiracies.... as Einstein said: human stupidity is limitless. If NASA wants to combat this, they have an impossible task.

Lots of ill-informed generalization there. Christians and Jews are not out on a Jihad to kill anybody, or to impose Old Testamentarial law about anybody. Those "religious misunderstanders" are limited to one religion alone.

It's good to have some skepticism so you won't be gullible & naïve.
But to much skepticism can make you narrow minded to extraordinary possibilities.
