Birds suffer 'worst ever' year for breeding

Researchers have found that 23 out of 24 of the most common species had a worse-than-average breeding season this year with the blackcap, whitethroat and garden warbler among several having their worst years since records began.

The great tit and the wren also suffered badly. Only the blackbird emerged unscathed – with a six per cent increase – as they feed on worms and beetles which thrive in damp conditions.
