what i find unlikely is although oddly shaped its still very human like, we are how we are only by chance after billions of years of development down to our environment and circumstance. i reckon if there were other intelligent beings out there they wouldn't be as humanoid as people usually represent them.

Long ago i learned in biology class that species that live under the same cirumstances or in the same ecological niche (or however you wanna call it) are likely to evolve with similar features. http://en.wikipedia....nalogy_(biology)

We humans are pretty well adapted to our environment, our body's shape and functions (walking bipedal, opposable thumbs and all that) evolved in the way they appear because that fitted best to what we need them for. So, to open a big can of "ifs" here: IF otherworldly beings exist and IF they make it to our world/dimension, and IF their homeworld is somewhat similar to ours, they actually might look pretty similar.

I have to agree with Jacques. In addition to the good information he has offered, there is also Convergent Evolution (LINK)

As far as we can tell, 50 million body shapes have been tested out here, but only one shape attained intelligence, and shape had everything to do with it. From the opposable thumb, to the advantages of walking upright, the aspects that led us to change the environment around us, not adapt to the environment. If we see other life, personally, I feel very strongly that is extremely likely to be rather familiar. After all, we are talking about life as we know it, and looking for earth like worlds. It does not see to much of a stretch to consider and earth like planet just might have followed the same evolutionary path we did, and as such, be rather familiar.

Example, Marsupial and Canids - different species opposite sides of the world:

The skulls of the thylacine (left) and the gray wolf are quite similar, although the species are only distantly related. Studies show the skull shape of the red fox is even closer to that of the thylacine.
