Still Waters Posted March 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 12, 2013 Japan says it has successfully extracted natural gas from frozen methane hydrate off its central coast, in a world first. Methane hydrates, or clathrates, are a type of frozen "cage" of molecules of methane and water. The gas field is about 50km away from Japan's main island, in the Nankai Trough. Researchers say it could provide an alternative energy source for Japan which imports all its energy needs. http://www.bbc.co.uk...siness-21752441

Babe Ruth Posted March 13, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 13, 2013 Yes, terrific news! I had been aware of the existence of that source, and it is good to know that the Japanese have now been able to put it to good use. This news might give those in the oil business a bit of anxiety. Lets hope so. Won't solve climate change though. Br Cornelius
