I think maybe people back away from succeeding, because to succeed means one then has to accept more responsibility for one's life. It's not the success that scares people, it's the responsibility that goes along with it. Because if we can make something good happen, then excuses for failure become increasingly invalid. And there are a lot of people who have all kinds of reasons or excuses for failure, most of them having little to do with their own actions or inactions. Once we succeed, we are faced then with issues of accountability for our past, present, and future; we can no longer claim victim status.
