A large mass of granite has been found on the seabed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, suggesting a continent may have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the Brazilian government announced.
A Brazilian official said the discovery of the granite — which normally forms only on dry land — is strong evidence that a continent used to exist in the area where the legendary island of Atlantis, mentioned in antiquity by Plato in his philosophical dialogues, was supposedly located.

Kawakami said researchers must look further into the composition of the granite and see if it matches the granite now found in Africa or South America.
“The concept of Atlantis came way before geology of the modern age was established. We should not jump to the Atlantis (conclusion) right away,” he said.

Not yet ... apparently ....

Atlantis was destroyed by under-water Bigfoot. You won't ever find any trace I'm afraid. :)

Wow! What a cool find. Thanks for posting this.

Also, I think Milo Thatch discovered Atlantis MANY years ago according to this film:

Have my doubts about it being Atlantis but it proves that because we are above the water now doesn't mean we will be in the future.

The finding was made using a Shinkai 6500 manned submersible operated by the Japanese agency. The seabed where the granite mass was discovered is estimated to have sunk into the sea several tens of million years ago. No man-made structures have been found there.

A good story, thanks for posting.

  • Almost all of earth , during its formation, was without water (as in oceans/seas). How does anyone suppose they will date the granite?
  • "Exist in an Area where the legendary Island of Atlantis....was supposedly located"??? How did this Brazilian Officer arrive at this conclusion? Did he read Timeaus and Critias backwards? Where are the geological markers? has he identified the Pillars of Hercules? is it anyway close to the African Continent (assuming Africa as Libya)???

They themselves state that no man-made structures have been found there. Then??? On what basis do they bring the Atlantis bogey into this???

The Rio Grande Rise, a seabed more than 1,000 km southeast of Rio de Janeiro:

"The rise itself stretches around 1,000 km at the widest point, and is considered part of the continent left behind when South America and Africa split apart more than 100 million years ago. The agency said it assumes the area was above sea level until about 50 million years ago but became submerged over a period spanning several million years, based on fossils found in the nearby seabed and other data."

Yep, that must be Atlantis: the right size (not), the right age (not), the right location (not).

Brazilian 'Atlantis' found
Geologists have announced the discovery of what has been dubbed the 'Brazilian Atlantis', some 900 miles from Rio.

But geologists in Brazil have now added their claims to speculation over the precise location of the mysterious land mass, mentioned first by Plato in around 360BC.

Working with scientists from Japan, experts believe they have found evidence of a continent that disappeared after Africa and South America separated, 900 miles from the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

....
“We speak of Atlantis more in terms of symbolism,” Mr Santos added. “Obviously, we don’t expect to find a lost city in the middle of the Atlantic.
“But if it is the case that we find a continent in the middle of the ocean, it will be a very big discovery that could have various implications in relation to the extension of the continental shelf.”

Scientists may have found Brazilian ‘Atlantis’
“This could be the Brazilian Atlantis. We are almost certain but we must bolster our hypothesis. We will have final (scientific) recognition this year when we conduct drilling in the area to retrieve more samples of these rocks,” the G1 news website quoted Ventura as saying.

"We began to see that the area could be a piece of the continent that disappeared into the sea millions of years ago," Ventura said.

Because nothing gets peoples attention faster than any mention of the word "Atlantis". The writer couldn't even be bothered, apparently, with knowing that Atlantis was never "a legend".

I agree. The sad part is that even if it were young enough to have been above sea level within human history, as well as inhabited, then whatever culture would have lived on it would be completely overtaken by the "Atlantis" claim and would likely never get their due recognition.

Problem.  From your link:

Quote

Granite, being intrusive, forms only at great depths under the surface, due to the need for pressure to create the granite.

Otherwise, it would be basalt (IIRC.)

Granite never forms "on dry land," taking the meaning of "dry land" in the usual sense.
