Frank Merton Posted May 10, 2013 #26 Share Posted May 10, 2013 I see no progress in computers or robots toward sentience, let alone mind. They remain at the insect level of responding reflexively through pre-programmed reactions to external stimuli. That a merging of human and machine will tend to occur, where we will be able to do complex math with machines wired into our heads or quickly look up facts or determine our exact location on the planet, seems likely, but not that the machines will begin to replace or even supplement our minds. Sundew Posted May 11, 2013 #28 Share Posted May 11, 2013 In Frank Herbert's Dune he envisioned a world where computers were suspect and mankind had instead trained specialized humans (Mentats) as living computers. If only the average brain could be trained to such a level.
Calle Posted May 12, 2013 #29 Share Posted May 12, 2013 (edited) Only stupid company would build artificiall intelligence without installing kill switch in the base of their programming & asimos laws of robotics and of course they have to think humans are their superior Edited May 12, 2013 by Zerocoder
Marcin Posted May 30, 2013 #30 Share Posted May 30, 2013 (edited) no it will not because it has been proven that not even the most most advanced and expensive super computer in the world is better than the human brain nor as more complex either.while some people believe this to be the future i don't there are many people and etc that think otherwise and have proof.yeah we will go into a new era but i will be a spiritual one not one filled with machines and etc.so no i don't fear these soulless machines nor their abilities and etc.they may be many things but they will never have one thing that humans and livings have and that is a soul and feelings real feelings and emotions and heart and all that makes us real and organic.take that you soulless machines and fakes!!! You're forgetting something here... these computers aren't better or more complex than our brain - yet. Moore's Law, read up on it, it was an estimation when he first said it, today we literally call it a law because of how accurate it seems to be. It's the driving force behind our technology and it's progress, I mean, look at first mobile phones when they came out, or closer - just at first smart phones when they first appeared and look at how much memory and processing power they had - and then compare them to what we have today. And it wasn't even all that long ago. Besides... feelings and emotions are not a sign of intelligence. Sooner or later we'll get to a point where machine will have far more complexity and intelligence than we do, since we're in current era of world wide dumbing down as we speak... Also, remember, machines (at least today) "think" in simple pattern: problem - solution. What do you think will be a first "thought" of an AI advanced enough to pass for self-aware? It exists, and it knows it does. Problem? It want's to remain that way, we are the next immediate threat to it. Solution?... Well, take a wild guess, there's more than one way to look at the solution, but considering that they have no emotions or concept of value of life (heck, like we're that much better anyway?), if push comes to shove, their lack of emotions will only be their advantage. Food for thought Edited May 30, 2013 by Marcin

Michelle Posted June 20, 2013 #32 Share Posted June 20, 2013 (edited) Oh dear, I don't want to know that much about most of the people who inhabit this earth think. UM is scary enough for me. Edited June 20, 2013 by Michelle
_Only Posted June 20, 2013 #33 Share Posted June 20, 2013 According to the guy the article is following, we will become immortal by compiling copies of our minds into a computer. No, whatever that thing is will be immortal. I'm still in here.
StarMountainKid Posted June 20, 2013 #34 Share Posted June 20, 2013 How accurate will the digital copy of our brain be inside the computer? There is a story, "The Jewel", by Greg Egan, where a tiny computer is inserted inside the brain at birth that absorbs all brain functions. When one becomes an adult one can choose to live with the "Jewel" instead of the brain (which is scraped out of the skull). Since the "Jewel" is immortal, one can insert it in clones when the original body wears out. The protagonist in the story worries if the "Jewel" is an exact enough copy of his mind. He's in love with a certain woman, but when he finally undergoes the change, he finds he is no longer attracted to her, and can't remember the love he had for her.
