Senate testimony reveals that AUMF has rendered the war power given Congress in the US Constitution to be null and void.  Absent repealing the AUMF, Congress is now subservient to the Pentagon and the Executive.

Barbara Lee in the House has proposed a bill to repeal AUMF.

Thoughts?

Washington gets explicit: its 'war on terror' is permanent

Senior Obama officials tell the US Senate: the 'war', in limitless form, will continue for 'at least' another decade - or two
- by Glenn Greenwald
- http://www.guardian....on-terror-obama

In the same AUMF proceedings held in the Senate, Obama officials acknowledged perhaps a decade or two of war, or better yet a "Thirty Year War" as described by Greenwald in his article on The Guardian.

Looks like defense related stocks are a good investment opportunity at this time! :tu:

It's unfortunate that Americans have allowed themselves to be lead down this insane path of endless war.

Of course the warmongers would argue that " War means more profits for us! And it's a cost effective way to maintain population control." After all blood and gore is a small price to pay in order to maintain the present day corpocracy that controls western governments and most of the world.

It's apparent that it's a win/win situation for somebody, but that somebody is certainly not the average American.

Americans were led down this path because of the deception of 11 September.  Just as the Neocons predicted, americans would be easily frightened, passions would be inflamed, and critical thinking eliminated.  Voila, an endless war mentality, and an endless war.

Eisenhower's farewell address, January 17, 1961.

President of the United States (and former General of the Army) Dwight D. Eisenhower used the term in his Farewell Address to the Nation on January 17, 1961:

A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction...
This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.

It wasn't just 9-11 .  We haven't had a period of peace lasting more than 20 years in our entire history. http://www.infopleas...a/A0931831.html  If it isn't the cold war, the war on drugs, or the war on terror, it would be something else.

A quote:
"This is the most astounding and the most astoundingly disturbing hearing that I've been to since I've been here. You guys have essentially rewritten the Constitution here today.

U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), questioning the position taken by the Defense Department that the military has the right to go after terrorists in any country that is failing to target them."
Right now on the front page of http://www.nti.org/gsn/.

i never would have thought that Hagel even harbored this kind of idea. He was a bastion of Constitutionality at one time.

-----------
Terrorism is NOT a new threat. It has been around since man has been warring. I just don't get it. Why make it the major threat?
And can we name factions of the US Govenment as terrorists as well, since there is rogue factors in the FBI and the CIA and perhaps the NSA.

I once posted this on an earlier UM thread but think its worth posting here too:

From General Smedley Butler's 'War is a Racket':

"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

In his penultimate chapter, Butler argues that three steps are necessary to disrupt the war racket:

1. Making war unprofitable. Butler suggests that the owners of capital should be "conscripted" before other citizens are: "It can be smashed effectively only by taking the profit out of war. The only way to smash this racket is to conscript capital and industry and labour before the nation's manhood can be conscripted. … Let the officers and the directors and the high-powered executives of our armament factories and our steel companies and our munitions makers and our ship-builders and our airplane builders and the manufacturers of all other things that provide profit in war time as well as the bankers and the speculators, be conscripted — to get $30 a month, the same wage as the lads in the trenches get"

2. Acts of war to be decided by those who fight it. He also suggests a limited plebiscite to determine if the war is to be fought. Eligible to vote would be those who risk death on the front lines.

3. Limitation of militaries to self-defence. For the United States, Butler recommends that the navy be limited, by law, to within 200 miles of the coastline, and the army restricted to the territorial limits of the country, ensuring that war, if fought, can never be one of aggression.

You are right about that, but as far as the specifics of the GWOT, it is utterly dependent upon the events of the day.  Remember we never had a DHS until after those events.  Of course that includes TSA blueshirts.
