Why are penguins unable to fly ?

The question in the article is about the evolutionary reason why penguins cannot fly. Why did they evolve from a flying bird to a swimming only bird?

Not the obvious reason like others here have stated.

Did anyone read the article?

Can I join the research team, 1. They originated in outerspace and landed in our oceans, 2. They were breed for thier feathers for pillows then evolved with out feathers for flight.3.they evolved from sea creatures not birds!

I think the title of the thread  has mislead some posters. 'Why did penguins loose the ability to fly' would have been more fitting...

Regardless though, the fat penguin jokes are fun, the next study lined up is 'Why don't Giraffes graze on grass'...

I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to show me where the hell Helen of Annoy has been for the past couple of months.
