Good manners prevailed as a  40-year-old woman in a grey felt hat and navy blue skirt started to push her way through the crowd.

Pressed ten-deep against the rail, the men lifted their flat caps and boaters and courteously stood aside. Soon, Emily Wilding Davison was right at the front, with a clear view of the most eagerly anticipated race of the season: the 1913 Derby.
