One person said it was - Amerigo Vesspucci and another said - Richard Ameryk. So I Googled it...I soon found this.... http://wiki.answers....erica_come_from A couple of sites give two different answers... So, the question is... Where do you believe the name America came from? One thing, though, is I am glad the continents aren't named after Columbus, even though technically they should be. Unrelated but at the fall of Granada, the King and Queen of Spain were there to watch it and so was Christopher Columbus. This marked the end of the reconquista of the entire Iberian peninsula and driving out the last of the Moorish rulers. Soon after that, like a machine of conquest that once started cannot be turned off, the conquest of America began with Columbus sailing off to find India. The united states came from the thirteen nations after the colonies won there war. They decided they needed each other to stay out of englands clutches. It took twelve years to come up with our constitution and one more year to come up with our bill of rights. *snip* Sorry I went on a rant here. Why can't it be, "New Zealand" rather than "the Commonwealth of New Zealand" (or whatever it really is). Some countries regally get peculiar and bizarre that way, like "Cote d'Ivoire" or "The People's Republic of Vietnam." "Britain" should surely be enough instead of, "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." A language which Hitler hated fyi. Atlantis is a pretty name. The Progressive States of Columbia works for me. Not everyone is open to alternative names but for the few who are what can you guys come up with as in names we could have been? Or could still be?
