  • Sometimes it's better to keep the mystery unexplained.

Since the 1930s, car makers have experimented with a host of features to give their models a unique selling point.

Yet some were so weird, and in some cases, dangerous that they never really took off.

This included glovebox minibars that kept tumblers in place using magnets, a steering wheel with a spike that could impale the driver, record players built into the dashboard and a sack that carried dogs alongside the vehicle.

Were all these necessarily potty or loony? Surely built-in minibars are commonplace in limos (though not for the driver, obviously)? And what's the record player built into the dashboard if not a forerunner of the CD Player? Light-sensitive headlights, too, are offered in upmarket models now, too, I believe. As with a lot of these "potty and loony" ideas, a lot of them were just before their time, before the technology had been developed for them to be really practical.

If, as it seems, we are in the process of becoming a totalitarian society in which the state apparatus is all-powerful, the ethics most important for the survival of the true, free, human individual would be: cheat, lie, evade, fake it, be elsewhere, forge documents, build improved electronic gadgets in your garage that’ll outwit the gadgets used by the authorities.

I think the absolute worst automobile invention ever is Truck-Nutz.
