It just occurred to me: I wonder why the human body doesn't have a mechanism to stop it putting on weight after a certain point? It seems absurd in a purely biological way that his body has allowed itself to get that big.

That's a interesting thought. You mean something like a biological switch? Or would that be something like a biological circuit breaker that gets tripped and shuts off when it's overloaded?  Unfortunately I think our skin can stretch to the point, when fat is gained, were we could look like a round human ballon.

what about that other piece from a few weeks ago, a woman with five kids, the council built her a new house, because they were currently living in a three bed room. its unbelievable. something has gone horribly wrong. in this case, a benefits cap of £26,000 a year, and a new house. anyone else would have to earn such luxuries.

He'd probably have a heart attack climbing the stairs anyway, a la Gilbert Grape's mom.

I think once you get to that point, you need some kinda of psychological help. It's not a matter of just putting down the hamburger. Spend money on getting him some help rather than a bigger house, if you have to spend money on anything.

I used to be quite heavy (nothing like that!) and would never imagine asking for anything free just because I was overweight. It's amazing that he has no shame, but it sounds to me like the UK benefits system breeds people who don't need any. It's rewarded, in fact.

Embrace the impossible.

i think people who eat themselves into such state should be locked up. self harm, laws in place already. were they should be put on rations and exercised. if they refuse to exercise, i'd put their food a mile away and make them walk to it. if they dont walk they dont eat. its simple, no trying to understand them and all that cobblers. its Darwin in action.

Edit, second thoughts just seen his picture, i'd throw him to the lions.

Yeah. Kill the fat people!

Can we kill people with bad attitudes too? They do more to harm others than some overweight guy...
With your idea smokers, people who eat too little, regular drinkers, etc. should all be locked up in some sort of health camp. lol

Anyway. There's no reason to do anything with them at all. People need to be forced to take responsibility for themselves sometimes. Of course, that would seem to require a complete overhaul of the UK benefits system.

Embrace the impossible.

It's frustrating to have to pay for the self destructive habits of people who just seem too weak to survive on their own.  And fat is the last acceptable bias.  It is universally found to be disgusting and even hate worthy by people.  These people typically destroy themselves quietly - no stealing or crime sprees or violence against others but because they LOOK disgusting we seem to feel free to heap abuse on them.  This guy probably isn't long for the world anyway but there's no arguing that he deserves to be cared for when he isn't even trying to survive.  When he gets this big maybe locking him up and forcing a slim down IS the best idea.

How about this simple answer. LOSE SOME *****NG WEIGHT!! The point being , that is a cheaper solution than another burden to the tax payers.

Yes, like most people in government assistance programs? Let them die, and decrease the surplus population, hmm? lol Do you (or people in general) get this upset every time they see a smoker?

Unless he's mentally deficient to begin with, why? It may seem cruel and heartless of me, but I think people need to sink or swim on their own... without a lifetime of buoys to grab onto but also without someone chucking cinder blocks at their head.

If you read what I said carefully you'll see that you are preaching to the choir :)  I have great compassion for the guy's situation AND think it is despicable that most seem to just want to let him die because he's unsightly.  Because that's what it gets down to isn't it?  It makes them uncomfortable to see the fat person.  But I say if we're so quick to shove him under the bus then lets throw the smokers and drinkers and porn addicts and gamblers...well... you get the idea.
