Click on the high res photo. You may have to do some cropping to create your Wallpaper.

The Germans have the evidence.  It may take a while to download photo: 7,066 X 5,411 pixels!

I did some cropping and made a great 1,600 X 900 photo for my wallpaper.

More info here:

http://berlinadmin.d....2005_eng.shtml

Look at the top. You will see Green & Blue.

Green = Vegetation

Blue = Lake

Lets call it Lake Tau.

Um... what? I see a perculiar shaped mound (it actually reminds me of a bug-eyed elf) and that inky little patch on the top left, while certainly out of place, I highly doubt would be water and vegitation. My guess would be an intense shadow on the crater wall, seeing as it is a giant crater.

I reject your reality, and substitute my own! Mostly because yours is boring as hell.

It sure is a high res photo.

It's not everyday i see something.......green....... on the planet Mars.

Good News: The Nicholson Crater is not far from the Gale Crater.

The Curiosity Rover is there at the base of Mount Sharp.

NASA needs to point that rover due east.  It's nuclear powered so it should get there soon.

Question: How deep is Lake Tau?

Yes but keep in mind Tau that many images from space and Mars are black and white, with NASA going in to bring in color. My guess would be to speed up transmission. Its not far fetched that the color would appear odd after this.

A simple solution here would be to point the bloody camera at the crater again at a different time of day.

Link doesn't provide information about vegetation or water.

Well, first of all, nice to see that this pic isn't from some whacky website, but from the german equivalent of NASA. I'm pretty sure though that the photo was artificially coloured and this is just a kind of glitch that occured. Anyway, i'm not a Scientist, so i wrote an email to the DLR and asked them what this is about.

I'll post the answer as soon as / if i get one!

I like to take long beach walks in the sunset with my wife until
the LSD wears off and i realize that i am dragging a stolen Mannequin over a LIDL parking lot.

It sure is suspicious that the Curiosity Rover just so happened to land just 1 crater to the west of the Nicholson Crater.

I wonder how long it will take for Curiosity to reach the Nicholson Crater?

The actual lake is on the west end of the Nicholson Crater.

Yes, but it does show something Green & Blue at the top of the photo.

How often do you see something green and blue on the planet Mars?

If you're looking for life, i would say -- Start There --.

I guess NASA could ignore the life on Mars and climb Mount Sharp instead.

(From the site):
"These images, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC)...

The colour images were processed using the HRSC nadir (vertical view) and three colour channels. The perspective views were calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the stereo channels. 3D anaglyph view of Nicholson Crater The 3D anaglyph images were created from the nadir channel and one of the stereo channels. Stereoscopic glasses are needed to view the 3D images Image resolution has been decreased for use on the internet."

...So the colors are part of the 3D effect right?
Not lakes and vegetation.
And the one image towards the bottom of the page is clearly topographic, the scale is to the right of the pic. (Just in case you didn't realize it Tau). :)

This would be my guess, those colours don't look natural - I seriously doubt they are present on the actual surface.

With the Curiosity Rover right next door, why ignore Lake Tau?

Go east my young man......go east!

BTW, it's too bad that the Spirit Rover is stuck in the mud.

Tau, when your restoring color to a digital image it works the same way as a printed image, using combinations of three base colors: yellow, blue, and red. With a an extremely dark blue for the crater shadow right next to the red/yellow of the Martian surface some of these pixels are probably showing up a dark green from color crossing.

Holy cow! It shows up at Google also!

http://www.google.com/mars/

Click on tags on upper right: Elevation / Visible / Infrared

There it is!   Lake Tau !

It's on the west end of Nicholson Crater.

3 Big Volcanoes to the right. Lake Tau is right on the equator of Mars.

You did didnt you?  :w00t:
