Four women accused of preying on the superstitions of elderly Chinese women to rob them of jewelry pleaded guilty in Vancouver court on Monday to possessing stolen property.
The women, aged 38 to 50, had been in custody for 56 days since their arrest in the summer, and were each sentenced to one day in jail.
Xiao Qiong Lin, Shao Quiong Luo, Jianmei Wu and Ya Jian Yang were also ordered to forfeit the stolen goods. They were allowed to keep only their clothing, the contents of their suitcases and the rings on their fingers, according to court officials.
The four women and a male accomplice were arrested on July 15 at Vancouver airport after border guards found $148,000 cash and a large amount of jewelry concealed in the lining of their suitcases, between magazine pages and inserted inside feminine hygiene products.

It is easier to claim it is paranormal than taking the hard route and find out what really happened.

quote from the article

"In the scam, elderly women are approached and told in Cantonese they’re being followed by a ghost and their children will die unless their money and jewelry are blessed. After the blessing, the thieves return a bag of worthless jewelry to their victims.
Vancouver police said they were aware of about a dozen cases."

This is despicable. the length some people will go.

And the gullibility some people have

" I imagine that the intellegent people are the ones so intellegent that they dont even need or want to look "intellegent" anymore".

Little old asian people , not just chinese, are very superstitious and believe in ghosts .
The chinese japanese thai and Philippinos especially .
The chinese and japanese have special stickers they place on the forehead of ghosts and restless bodies , to keep the souls at rest .
They have religious mantras written on them .
Little old chinese ladies are ripe for this kind of scam .
Its actually very similar to the scams in the hispanic communities.
