An ivory toothbrush thought to have belonged to Brazil's Emperor Pedro II, and a minty toothpaste made by a European chemist for the Portuguese queen, are among more than 200,000 objects dating from the 17th to 19th centuries that archeologists have unearthed from a site in Rio de Janeiro being used for an extension of the city's subway lines.

it is, in fact!

Its boar bristles are long gone, but the inscription remains legible: "His Majesty the Emperor of Brazil."

well, not his name exactly, but i doubt there were all that many emperors of brazil around at the time. plus it came from the old palace dump, the article says. trash is such a great source for history.

I'm more interested that Brazil had an Emperor, I had thought they moved straight from being a colony to being an independant republic. Shows just how much interesting stuff there is to know, and life is so short.
