Two professional colorists have combined their skills with photographs and fascination with the American Civil War to create a remarkable series of color photographs from the era.

British colorist Jordan Lloyd, 27, met fellow colorist Mads Madsen, 19, from Denmark when he started posting on Madsen's subreddit 'Colorized History'.

Wonderful job, especially the Mark Twain photo. Shame the comment section can't appreciate it.

I reject your reality, and substitute my own! Mostly because yours is boring as hell.

i love the idea of bringing more life to these pictures. it's odd how color makes people in the pictures seem more real, and less like historic dolls, or similar. i'd like to see this tried with some more pictures of ordinary soldiers, though.

imagine living in the early days of photography, and just how remarkable even a blurry picture would have seemed.

Pictures look so much more vivid in colour, great work.

Dear you guys. Words cannot express how much I hate you guys. As we fight our way northward into the great unknown, only that one thing remains certain: that I hate you guys with every tired muscle in my confederate body. We have taken Topeka and I must rally the men onward to Missouri. Because I will not stop until we have won it all, and you guys are my slaves. Because I hate you guys. I hate you guys so very very much. Yours, General Cartman Lee.

Very cool.  I never knew that Mark Twain served in the Confederate Army.

This is excellent work. Both men behind this project are supremely gifted.
