Angela left her apartment at 7pm on Sunday night 11-8-92 and was later found at apex.9:20 am on 11-9-92, her 22nd birthday, decapitated in the vacant field next to her apartment. Her purple 21-speed Diamondback Topanga bicycle and Sony Walkman were missing and never recovered. She had only lived in Phoenix for 5 months and at the time living with her boyfriend who was cleared in DNA testing. She was a recent graduate of the DeVry Los Angeles branch and originally from Camp Hill PA- a suburb of Harrisburg where she was born and raised. She left home after high school for college in New Jersey, where she met her boyfriend, and later moved to Los Angeles before coming to Phoenix.
At the time of her murder, she was working at Syntellect Inc-a telecommunications company off Greenway road and Interstate 17. Her apartment was off Interstate 17 and Cactus road, three miles south of her work. Her head was discovered floating in the canal apex. two miles south of where her body was found on 11-20-92 by a mentally disabled fisherman who has since died, Mark Qualls. Investigators believe Brosso's killer knew her and the area, and that he attempted a post-mortum "skinning" of Brosso's corpse-a blatant imitation of the character Buffalo Bill from the 1991 movie Silence of the Lambs. Evidence showed that Brosso was not decapitated where her body was discovered.
Melanie was a 17 year-old Arcadia High School Junior who went out for a bike ride on 9-21-93 also at 7pm and was found floating in canal the next morning around 10am after police where notified by a jogger who noticed blood on the canal bank. Melanie was not mutilated, but she was redressed in a turquoise body suit that wasn't hers and was also killed by way of stabbing. Her green and blue Specialized 21 speed HardrockSport bike was also missing and never discovered.
In March of 1994, DNA testing linked both murders to one single male suspect. In a November 2012 Arizona Republic article on the case, Phoenix Police Sargent Troy Hillman claimed investigators believe, given the way the girls were killed, that the killer had specialized military training. Unfortunately, despite the DNA sample being in a nationwide data base, the killer has never been found. Around the time of the murders, there was a rumor they were "cult related".
I was wondering if there were similar crimes that could be linked to these cases.
