Fort Worth, Texas -- Ethan Couch, a 16-year-old Texas boy who killed four people while driving drunk, has been sentenced to 10 years' probation after his defenders argued he was a victim of "affluenza" -- being raised by rich parents who set no limits.

The sentence imposed Tuesday by State District Judge Jean Boyd stunned the victims' family members, some of whom told KHOU.com that they'd forgiven Couch but had expected him to serve some prison time.
It also disappointed prosecutors who had asked Boyd to sentence Couch to 20 years in prison, the maximum.

So 'damned silly sentencing' isn't limited to the British judiciary, after all!

"Gæð a wyrd swa hio scel, ac gecnáwan þín gefá!": "Fate goes ever as she shall, but know thine enemy!".
I can teach you with a quip, if I've a mind; I can trick you into learning with a laugh; Oh, winnow all my folly and you'll find, A grain or two of truth among the chaff!

Gggrrr!!!    So, this kid just learned that all he has to do is flash his wealth a little bit and even murder is acceptable.

If being rich is a disease, perhaps we need to put an end to the epidemic.

'A phantom,' said my Uncle Mycroft, who had just materialised, 'is essentially a heteromorphic wave pattern that gains solidity when the apparition converts thermal energy from the surroundings to visible light. It's a fascinating process and I'm amazed no one has thought of harnessing it - a holographic TV that could operate from the heat given off by an average-size guinea pig.' ~ First Among Sequels, Jasper Fforde

He is not guilty because his parents never punished him for doing bad things.  And the law not punishing him reinforces his bad behavior.  There is no logic in that, or am I missing something?
