I think this is more appropriate. The question remains, what will you learn from it, and can you?

Oh, there's some brilliant ones. I used to have a site bookmarked with some brilliant examples. Socialist Realist kitsch is an art form in itself.

Of course,  the Journalists, in their eagerness to stoke up fear of the Red Menace, may have forgotten the concept that one might be tongue in cheek, of course. Many of them, as I said, are great pieces of art in a kitsch kind of way. Of course, it may also be that the story itself is also tongue in cheek, and that they do recognise the concept of irony, and that some people who read the story don't, and see it as proof that Mr. O's closest aides and advisors are Commie sympathisers.

I dont know if the couple are Russian sympathisers but its interesting to note that Jay got his B.A. cum laude in Russian and eastern european studies from Yale when he was just 21 and Claire was formerly married to a CNN Moscow correspondent. Something else interested me as well...... she's 3 yrs older then him.  Probably his first girlfriend.   Looks and acts like the type who was a mamas boy who needs a mother like spouse.  I know I'm judging him but it's what I perceive in watching him over the yrs.

What are you going on about?  I started off by saying "I dont know if they're sympathisers" in reference to your post above mine.

They do have interests in Russia and eastern europe so the posters aren't a surprise.  Besides for the magazine to include them in the photo it was meant to be seen.

So you didn't select & highlight the fact that he'd studied Russian & Eastern European Studies as if that was some proof that he was a fifth columnist, then?

Nope... I saved that for you to suggest.

Sure, some of the Red propaganda posters are stylistically aesthetic, and I knew someone would use this argument to defend Jay's "taste". He can have all the Soviet posters he wants, it's the "bad optics" in the media that he should of been aware of. Like most "elites' though, he is out of touch with common sensibilities.

Another thought. Would a Republican, with a degree in German studies have thought nothing of up leaving posters of Nazi propaganda for the media to see?

Why is "Soviet Kitsch" acceptable?

I think it's the passage of time and the view of a youth culture that never really saw the evils done in the name of Communism.  They seem to either think the reports are a lie or are exaggerated.  Ask the East European countries who "prospered" under this loving system for decades.  Maybe the ubiquitous queues for things as simple as bread and toilet paper were just propaganda?  Yes, I'm sure that must be the case.  If there is any justice, those who idealize the system that caused so much pain in the world will someday feel that boot on their own neck.  But hey!  At least it won't be an American boot!

In that case, Carney should get a Walter Duranty award.

"Duranty won a Pulitzer Proze in 1932 for a series of stories on the Soviet Union. Duranty has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly the Ukraine Mass Starvation (1932–33). Years later, there were calls to revoke his Pulitzer; even The Times acknowledged his articles constituted "some of the worst reporting to appear in this newspaper.""

  • We don't need to conquer the world, we need to conquer our individual selves first. Then the world will be at peace.

In the colleges and high schools these days, they would teach at least 70% of the time in some classes a lot about socialism, especially if one is taking Sociology and  Anthropology. I have feeling this has been going on for decades. I had one Sociology Professor who called it "Democratic Socialism", the younger students in my class were lapping it up. You could tell they were pretty well influenced by it.

So that's probably the case for Carney, he's just simply influenced by it.

Each generation has to learn the hard way I guess.  America certainly isn't blameless in the world but NEVER could it be compared to the sheer brutality of the Soviet system.
