I wonder if you folk could help me ?

I'm writting a little story to post in UM, but I'm stuck on a name.

Imagine if the entire Arabian Peninsula (from the United Arab Emirates in the South, up through Saudi and Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Lebannon, Israel etc) was to create a common trading block, with a common security model.

So.. a bit like "The European Union meets NATO".

What would they call themselves ? It would have to be a name that means something to both Arabs and Jews alike (along with the various Christian groups).

Initially, I was thinking of a variation on the Arabian Peninsula, but that doesn't really work, because Israel wouldn't accept being labelled as 'Arab' .. and anyway, neither it, Lebanon or Jordan are really on the Peninsula.

Then I thought of variations on 'The Levant" ... but that would exclude everything South of Jordan.

It can't be an overtly religious name, because the three main religious groups couldn't agree on anything. Nor do they have much in common in regards History. So it would probably have to be something Geographical ... or else an Acronym/abbreviation, in the style of NATO ?

The name should - ideally - also reflect the concept/spirit of friendly co-operation for mutual gain, including mutual assistance in the event of disasters or attack.

Any thoughts for such a name ?

I realize that you'd like to minimize the religious overtones but it probably can't be done since Islam is the greatest point of cohesion in this culture.  What you have described (almost perfectly) is a new Caliphate.  My guess is that they'd have that word in any name.  It also would probably include the geographic area by some historic reference.

Not a bad idea at all Jeem.. thanks for that one.

I'm wondering, however: do Israeli's, or Jordanians, or Saudi's identify themselves as being in the "Middle East" ? Isn't that a Western construct ?

Well this is just it, isn't it.  Creative writing.   It takes a lot of that, to excuse the load of this.

I don't know if acronyms are OK by you, and depending on whether North Africa is included or not, how about MENAA or MENAU ( Middle Eastern & North African Alliance/ Union).   It could also be UMENA (Union of ME & North Africa) which is similar to  Arabic "our mother". If you use Arabic, acronym for Union of ME States would be IDSHA.

Oh you're a great creative writer.  You almost make oppression sound reasonable every time you respond to criticism of it by asking instead about oppressors' rights.

There is free trade in many places of the Middle East now, and there should be trade in the places in the Middle East where it's being sanctioned or blockaded.   I just bought some blank keys all the way from Kuwait on Ebay a few months ago.   Like trade typically works, it doesn't matter to me that the place I got my keys from is named "Kuwait".  What matters to me is that I got my keys.  That simple process of buying and selling with other countries cuts out all the political BS and all the bureaucratic favoritism  There's less and lesser reason to fight when we're too busy trading with each other.  I don't have to get wrapped up in the key seller's personal life.  I don't have to figure out which ethnic group he belongs to.  Or what sect of Islam he prefers.
I needed some new keys, someone in Kuwait had beautiful brass copies of the exact keys I was looking for and gave me a great deal.  Even included an extra key in the package that I didn't even pay for.    Happy to do business.  Would do business with this seller again.  Didn't need any more departments making the gears turn.  Didn't need a new agency or a new union of countries.  And that's how it should work for all countries, whatever their continent or country or other identifier happens to be.

It being in the Middle East, it could be called the Eastern Alliance but then Xindi came to mind but going with something more serious, how 'bout UST?  United Semite Tribes or Democratic Union of Semite Peoples Socialistic Republic… DUSPSR (or some permutation).  Or even CXT (from Coexist)

Interesting thought RavenHawk.

Are Arabs classed as Semitic, though ? Or - perhaps more importantly - do they self-identify as such ?
