The strange world of felt presences

On 20 May 1916, Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley, and Tom Crean reached Stromness, a whaling station on the north coast of South Georgia. They had been walking for 36 hours, in life-threatening conditions, in an attempt to reach help for the rest of their party.

They did not talk about it at the time, but weeks later all three men reported an uncanny experience during their trek: a feeling that “often there were four, not three” men on their journey.

I guess if I was walking in the bitter cold, enduring life-threatening conditions then it may be possible that my brain would start to create all sorts of hallucinations. Maybe, in some manner, it is the brains way way to stave off loneliness in such a dreary environment.

My FAVOURITE tales are those of Shackleton...I mean just his journey and of course the 'other man' is icing on the cake when you know what they went through.... and there have been many similar tales of the 'presence'... Ive even had one

In the British Medical Journal

No previous illnesses

Born in continental Europe in the mid-1940s the patient settled in Britain in the late 1960s. After a series of jobs, she got married, started a family, and settled down to a full time commitment as a housewife and mother. She rarely went to her general practitioner as she enjoyed good health and had never had any hospital treatment. Her children had also been in good health.

In the winter of 1984, as she was at home reading, she heard a distinct voice inside her head. The voice told her, “Please don't be afraid. I know it must be shocking for you to hear me speaking to you like this, but this is the easiest way I could think of. My friend and I used to work at the Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street, and we would like to help you.”

AB had heard of the Children's Hospital, but did not know where it was and had never visited it. Her children were well, so she had no reason to worry about them. This made it all the more frightening for her, and the voice intervened again: “To help you see that we are sincere, we would like you to check out the following”—and the voice gave her three separate pieces of information, which she did not possess at the time. She checked them out, and they were true, but this did not help because she had already come to the conclusion …

strange "presences" by perception and definition are something one senses as an external entity..

Just saying... Hallucination is not the only possibility.

But it IS the most plausible and likely.

There are plenty of sensations the body can produce making it seem like the stimulus is from the outside when it actually originates inside.

The body does odd things when stressed.

When you have been in a life threatening situation and a "presence" helps you out of danger you will believe .

You'll never walk alone, if you believe.

I believe.

Perhaps.. In your paradigm, yes..

These kind of presences are perceptual, and as such the paradigm of the perceiver is the unit of measure.. A chemist, a scientist, a psychologist and a metaphysisist will possibly perceive the presence differently.. It can also be argued that without the stresses of physical and emotional hardship and life threatening situations one can't receive that kind of help.

Spud the Mackem nailed it..

Tks Prof T. There are several times that I have been in life threatening danger and I cannot explain how it seemed that someone/thing was telling me what to do next to avert this situation, It seems that you have a friendly presence beside you advising you what to do by putting thoughts (not voices ), into your head.Anyway its worked up to now so I believe in this sort of "happening".This may sound weird but to me its completely normal, and I hope this presense doesn't decide to go on holiday when needed.

If you read a detailed account of what transpired during that expedition, it is nothing short of miraculous ! Amazing coincidences and good fortune, following the bad that is.

Another' presence' isnt that unusual ... even Jung had his 'spirit companion' or 'daemon' .
