[Merged] Scientists recreate 'Invisible Man'

Volunteers have experienced what it feels like to disappear in an experiment echoing the HG Wells story "The Invisible Man".

Scientists created the illusion using 3D virtual reality headsets that projected an image of empty space when participants looked down at their own bodies.

The trick was completed by stroking each volunteer with a paint brush which in the display appeared to be touching an invisible surface.

Who hasn't dreamed of having an invisibility cloak like Harry Potter's? While these don't yet exist in reality, it is possible to give people the illusion that they're invisible, new researchicon1.png suggests.

Using clever camera angles, virtual goggles and physical caresses, a team of researchers was able to make people feel as if they had an invisible body. Furthermore, feeling invisible reduced the anxiety brought on by standing in front of an audience, the researchers found.
