Still Waters Posted July 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2015 We're a long way off from having robots with an artificial intelligence close to what is seen in movies such as Her or Ex Machina. But for the first time, three humanoid robots showed a glimmer of self-consciousness by solving a classic philosophical problem. The robotic trio was composed of three old Nao models, but the experiment that was conducted on them was extremely novel - and so were the results. http://www.popsci.co...-self-awareness

Paranormalcy Posted July 19, 2015 #8 Share Posted July 19, 2015 This is terrific! I don't even understand the King's Advisor puzzle, so I guess I'm even more impressed at the robots figuring out the dumbing pill idea. That's great! Maybe they'll really get some form of rudimentary intelligence! But they still fall over in robot soccer.
Kenemet Posted July 19, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 19, 2015 I think this is pretty cool! I'm not entirely sure this counts as 'self awareness' but it is an interesting piece of robotics and programming work.

Maybe they'll really get some form of rudimentary intelligence! But they still fall over in robot soccer. The key to the puzzle is that there must be a knowable solution (i.e. it can be reasoned and doesn't have to be guessed.) And for there to be a knowable solution the only possible colour each advisor must wear is blue, because if even one of them wears a white hat then no knowable solution exists.

UFO_Monster Posted July 19, 2015 #12 Share Posted July 19, 2015 (edited) While everyone spills doom and gloom...this excites me. One of my hopes as a child was to one day live in an age where we could communicate with "living," thinking machines and develop some kind of mutual understanding with them like in television and movies. For the longest time I thought it would be impossible, but this changes that. That is, if this isn't anything other than just very good programming, in which case, I shall weep. +OverSword Posted July 20, 2015 #13 Share Posted July 20, 2015 All I know is that after I win the lottery I'm getting at least two or three of those little robots. They can bring me beer and watch science fiction movies with me and we will live happily ever after.

Dark_Grey Posted July 20, 2015 #16 Share Posted July 20, 2015 What is it that drives or compels human beings to relentlessly pursue innovations that are at best dubious and uncertain? We had no idea what the atom bomb was capable of, but theories included blowing a hole in the atmosphere or even destroying the planet. So what did we do? Detonated one anyways. Are we just slaves to primitive monkey DNA? Armed with brilliant minds but short-term reward systems? It's proving to be a dangerous combination. IMO we are obsessed with the idea of bringing machines to life as though this was always the plan. Like giving life to machines is the reason we exist at all - because once they do become sentient, what happens to us? What can we offer a world dominated by a vastly superior intelligence? +OverSword Posted July 20, 2015 #17 Share Posted July 20, 2015 LOL! All the panicky doomsayers here are cracking me up. A little robot being able to tell it's audio functions are not activated is a far cry from our machine overlords sending us to death camps because we are illogical. Inventing the wheel is a far cry from 200MPH sports cars. Did any great innovation ever spring out of the ground fully functional? I'm not saying we should stop development but for God's sake let's pump the brakes a little bit and take all scenarios in to account before we get to the point where someone gets to flick the switch.

gatekeeper32 Posted July 22, 2015 #21 Share Posted July 22, 2015 (edited) So I guess that with the crime, wars, terrorism, child abuse, pollution, corruption, human trafficking, and drugs should be enough to demonstrate that one should not fear or have any concern with the nature of humans beings that any new advancement of technology will be used wisely and responsibly with reflection to consequences of abuse, misuse ot mishandling. bison Posted July 26, 2015 #22 Share Posted July 26, 2015 I don't think that the robot's action demonstrated self awareness. It could be programmed to say it hadn't had its voice turned off, as soon as it was able to speak. That doesn't establish that it is aware of itself or of its vocal ability. If such a robot were given the classical self awareness test, it would presumably fail. Put a spot on its forehead, then place it before a mirror. Will it take notice of the spot, touch it, or try to remove it, if it hasn't been specifically programmed to do so, in a mechanical and non-conscious way? I very much doubt it. If it can't recognize itself in a mirror, and act on the basis of its awareness of some change in its own bodily integrity, what evidence do we have that it is self aware? There's always some kind of private organization who wants this technology to make a self-aware killing machine with auto-aim and super AI why robots need to be made self aware? Because human is lazy and they want something to replace them to think. Edited July 27, 2015 by FlyingAngel
