Turkey Invokes Article 4 of NATO

Thanato

Recommended Posts

Turkey has called a special meeting of Nato ambassadors to discuss military operations against the Islamic State (IS) group and PKK Kurdish separatists.

The session is to take place in Brussels on Tuesday.

Turkey launched air attacks against IS militants in Syria and resumed air raids against PKK camps in northern Iraq following recent attacks.

In one attack blamed on IS, 32 people were killed in a suicide bombing near the Syrian border on 20 July.

The PKK killed Turkish police in the wake of the bombing in retaliation for what they saw as Turkey's collaboration with IS.

The raids against Kurdish separatist camps in northern Iraq in effect ended a two-year ceasefire. Turkish fighter jets launched a new wave on Sunday against PKK targets in northern Iraq, according to Turkish state media.

rather funny how events turn out, lets remember Turkey was backing ISIS, along with Saudi Arabia etc in the Sunni v Shia uprising.. - Turkey wouldn't allow NATO or western boots on the ground or use of airfields ect to attack ISIS in Syria, annoying the likes of the USA, remember when ISIS took the border town in Syria and the Turkish troops could be seen on the surrounding hills standing idle.

What has happened to change Turkish minds all of a sudden?. - Two things have happened, the Iranian agreement over their nuclear programme. and ISIS attacking Turkish territory and threatened to attack western tourists in Turkey - Turkey have sht themselves when the USA and five powers done a deal with Iran So Turkey has had to do something in response. - scratches their head, and think how can we get back onside with the US, i know lets take the fight to ISIS. the Americans will be pleased with that.

tell them to pee off. and shove article 4 up their bum.

Turkey should be escorted out of NATO. They want to pretend to fight ISIS while actually helping them in many cases, while continuing to fight the Kurds that are leading the fight and doing the heavy lifting against ISIS, that's their business and the rest of NATO shouldn't move to support that. They aren't part of the solution, Turkey is definitely part of the problem.

Turkey has been attacked a few times this year, the Istanbul bombing, the Diyarbakir bombing and the Suruc bombing. They are responding to a new group linked to Islamic state

Aren't Turkey attacking IS because of multiple terror attacks perpetrated by IS in a Turkish city?

Mostly Turkey is attacking the PKK, which would happen to be local terrorists/ freedom fighters (depending on your side of the fence).

Exactly! I think they are invoking this article to give cover to a strong effort against - not ISIS - but the Kurds! The insanity just continues to mount.

How is NATO officially backing IS. is it by delivering the 500 lbs of High Explosive from Air Drops? To bad they always detonate on impact.

Turkey is attacking because Erdogan's party lost power in the last election and the little peasant president is afraid he'll be kicked out of his shiny new palace. So, in desperation to salvage what he can of his image, he's done what he's always feared and loathed to do; unleashed his military.

Turkey has played with fire by faciliating the jihadists expension in Syria, all in a bid to weaken the Assad regime.

But now ISIL is growing restless along their borders and have become seriously problematic for the country's security.

So unless Erdogan moves preemptively to try to undo the damages, Turkey may soon become a target for sustained attacks.

He's also using the present circumstances to repress the Kurds whose votes were key to the downfall of his party's lock on the government. So, prepare for further atrocities in the guise of cooperation with the allies against ISIL.
