CJ1983 Posted April 29, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 29, 2016 I came across this video a few days ago, and immediately thought if this was performed at a high altitude at night with lights on, this could easily be thought to be a dancing UFO. And when the jet takes off into the distance, it's just crazy fast. Floats around like a helicopter, kind of, then takes off into the distance faster than any helicopter could ever go. Watch the video.
ChrLzs Posted April 29, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 29, 2016 .. Hate to disappoint anyone but that is an RC operator responsible for that, not a 'pilot'. It isn't a full-size pilotable jet, it's a large Remote Control aircraft. But your point is still valid, OP.
ChrLzs Posted April 29, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2016 If anyone wants that proven, watch the clip carefully and you'll see the perspective is all wrong and when it goes off to the right the jet is obviously smaller than it first looks and not much taller than the people. Also you'll see GABA Hobby t-shirts (make rc aircraft) in the clip... And , properly labeled, and it looks like the guy wearing the harness may be the controller - he appears to take a quick snap of the jet right at the beginning of the unedited clip..
psyche101 Posted April 29, 2016 #4 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Glad you came along Chrlz, I was just about to ask that question. Is that real? I have seen another similar, and also wondered for a while now if it is genuine. Amazing acrobats, I am just not entirely sure planes can actually do stuff like this? Merc might be a good man to clear that one up for us this one:
Habitat Posted April 29, 2016 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Well, the OP's plane had me fooled, I was sure it was full size !

I don't know if the F-35 has ever actually dared to operate from a carrier yet, and it certainly couldn't possibly do that in VTOL mode if it could.

ChrLzs Posted April 29, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) As far as I am aware, only a few very specialised stunt planes (prop driven) can and do 'prop-hang', and there's a reason it's usually only done by stunt pilots... Some, but not that many, jets have a thrust to mass ratio that allows them to accelerate while vertical, but....there's a big problem if you want to do it at slow speeds or for hovering - with no air rushing over control surfaces, the aircraft can't be controlled! That's why it's generally not done by anybody except stunt pilots in controlled and practised conditions. I would guess (assuming the footage is genuine..) that the RC has some thrusters or some other trickery to enable it to do the maneuvers shown there. Another issue is that when a jet is fully loaded with fuel, it probably won't have sufficient thrust/mass ratio, so it would have to be done when the tanks are significantly emptied. All in all, it's not a good tactic. But certainly various other tactics, like the Cobra, could look totally 'alien' at night.. It looks weird enough in daylight.. You can see even in those, the pilot simply loses control briefly and has to wait for the aircraft to fall / pick up speed. qxcontinuum Posted May 3, 2016 #12 Share Posted May 3, 2016 these RC planes are far to be silent. They are jet powered
ChrLzs Posted May 3, 2016 #13 Share Posted May 3, 2016 sigh.. and if there is a crosswind or downwind between you and it, it could be lost in the background noise at 100 metres or so, especially from directly in front. Whether something can be heard or not depends on MANY things, eg behind a window, hearing aid, background noise level, angle of approach, wind/fog/mist, etc. Real investigators do not offer one-line simplistic handwaves... that's the job of ufo=alienz diehards..
psyche101 Posted May 3, 2016 #14 Share Posted May 3, 2016 That one does look like a video game but Harriers do lifet off vertically like that. Yes a Harrier can, loved them since I was a kid, super impressive aircraft I always thought, but the video calls it a F-35 which is cannot be, the F-35A has conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B has short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C has carrier-based Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) variant. That is outright VTOL.
