One day last summer an old man stopped in front of my house with a pickup truck full of the biggest watermelons I had ever seen.  He said he was selling them for $5.00 each.
After a lot of 'looking' and 'thumping' like I knew what I was doing, I finally picked one out and paid the man.  And then he told me this:

There is only one way I know of to tell if a watermelon is ripe.  What you do is take a broom,  a straw broom, and pull one of the straws out of the broom.  Lay the straw on the watermelon  across the width of the melon...if it is ripe the straw will turn 90 degrees and will then be sitting lengthwise on the watermelon.

I tried it and sure enough it worked. yes.gif   That was a darn good melon too! grin2.gif

That's a weird one!  Why would the straw turn if the melon was ripe but not turn if it wasn't ripe?

I've always checked by thumping them.  If they sound hollow, they're generally ripe.

The kitty made me do it!
